Cold had descended and taken root, making leaves rustle like glass beads and turning night skies into crystal vaults.
The two men sat as close to the fire as they could stand; held between scorching heat and back-stinging cold, pipes lit.
Prickly holly-leaves from yesteryear littered the ground and Halbarad threw some into the flames. They burnt with a flickering green-tinged outline, like discarded strips of northern light.
Aragorn watched from inside his hood. Despite the discomfort he felt content; life defiantly condensed down to elemental things: companionship, a fire...and a blanket of pipe smoke under a wheel of stars.
