Camping By The Carrock
Thranduil came awake instantly as a guard whispered to him. “My lord! There is a bear prowling the camp. Should we shoot it?”
“No - stay your arrows!” Thranduil rose and stepped outside the circle of firelight as a great black bear approached him, its muzzle sticky with the honey of wild bees.
He stood calmly as the bear rose onto its hind legs. Its shape seemed to waver and suddenly a man stood there, broad and black-haired.
“Beorn. I hoped we might see you,” Thranduil spoke above the guards’ stifled curses. “Will you join us for a glass of mead?”
