Teaching

“I’ve practiced for months!”

“The farmers have toiled for years.”

“Father, the last of the harvest is always weak, not fit for dog scraps.”

“For some those scraps are a feast, and war is near our doorstep. The Games will wait until spring.”

Spring. Then autumn, then spring, surely. There hadn’t been games in Gondor since his namesake’s time.

Tunic fashioned of burlap sacks, shoes “borrowed” from the guard room, he left fineries behind and sulked to the fourth circle, blending in with the destitute, bent to drown his cares. Let those slippery cadgers ply me with woeful tales now.

Learning

The guise worked. But, speech was more unforgiving than when he stood before them Steward’s heir.

“What do me taxes pay for anyway? The old man to laze ‘round drinkin’ ‘is brandy?”

Boromir rose, hand straying to his absent training sword. The fire in his gaze was stoked by ale slopped down his shirt.

“Sorry, Mate.” Fearful eyes retreated. “Here. Me best silver. Fetch a price.” A spoon. Not silver, but tin.

His father’s words rung in his ears; sobered his indignation.

“I know a man who has the ear of the steward. Is there aught I might pass on?”
