‘These are the Brown Lands’, said the teacher, pointing at a map that had expanded considerably, compared to the one used in her youth. ‘Bad things happened there long ago that left them bare, but I have heard from Master Meriadoc that they are brown no longer. Nothing big grows yet, but grass has sprung up there and many poppies. Now, in summer the barren slopes are all speckled red.’

‘They should call them Poppy Lands, then,’ said a boy. ‘What is that in Elvish?’

‘Why,’ exclaimed a girl who had a crush, ‘Poppy, that is your own name, Teacher!’
