I can see him getting his own son to d - but perhaps just calling it the Luck Stone until memory of the elves has gone completely - but the stone is still cleaned.
I'll bet he tells his son that story after all. It's tradition and tradition is usually honored long after the reasons and the histories have been lost.

Cleaning it for reverence, then tradition, then finally luck... because 'we always have'. Echoes from the past trickling down the ages. Nice.
I'm always intrigued by archaeology programmes on TV when they give hopeful prognostications of what (or who) they think they've found.
