“Someone once told me we were related to them. Stands to reason, them being Hardlands an’ all. But Grandfather wouldn’t speak of them except to say they were nothing to do with us.”

“Ah, well now. I was told by my great-grandad that they are indeed related to yourself. But their branch began on the distaff side; the sister of your four times great grandfather had a lad born on the wrong side of the blanket, with no named Da, so he took her name, and they’re descended from him.”

“Ha! Well that explains it. Very respectable was my Grandfather!”

...............

“Now let me get this right - Chalse Hardland was the one who had the terrible accident wasn’t he?”

“Aye, that’s him. Walking home in the dark, he was, when Caradoc Oldfoot ran him down with the bread cart. Broke both his legs and hit his head on a stone - never recovered.”

“But how did Old Caradoc not notice him? I know it was dark, but even so… And surely the pony would have tried to avoid him?”

“Well - there were whispers at the time that Marguerite Oldfoot had entertained Chalse a bit too often whilst Caradoc delivered the bread…”

When I first took my husband home to meet my family, I explained that the Manx are like Hobbits - we all know our family histories for at least four generations. These were inspired by a conversation this morning with my cousin - although a couple of details have been changed to protect the innocent... :)
