Another year, a new year, he told himself, a beginning… though beginnings implied endings… He bit his lip, No, not that…
He was still the man he’d always been… yes, there was the rub… ‘man’. For a Second Child brought up among Elvenkind, mortality was a pressing matter. Their ‘new years’ stretched ahead almost infinitum, unless battles or ambush intervened, while his, though likely to be longer than most, were definitely finite.
He rose from the bed’s edge he perched on and walked to the window, pushing aside the shutter. The New Moon’s crescent shimmered brightly above the far hills.
Halbarad burst into their shared room, flask of wine in one hand, plate of cake in the other. He thrust the cake at Estel, and threw himself on the bed... careful not to jounce the wine-skin. He bounced a few times, assuring himself of the mattress’ buoyancy, before sitting up, holding the flask to his lips. He swallowed several mouthfuls before offering it to his companion.
“Come on Estel..."
“You know that’s not my name.”
“Aragorn... here’s sweet honey cake, good wine, good friends... the New Moon’s up, the dancing’s begun. Come savour our first New Year!”
Slowly, Estel smiled.
