For years they travelled together, by foot, horse, occasionally by sea. Returning from the hidden glades of Imladris they had become shield-brothers, united by days and nights in the wilds, each an eager listener to the other’s heart. All doubts, hopes and dreams passed easily between them… well, almost all… Halbarad knew the duties Aragorn bore, a geas laid by the Elf-queen and Rivendell’s Master. Most of all, regretfully, Halbarad knew it was a fate he could not break.
Summoned to secret meetings, Aragorn took him aside.
“This task… You must become my captain now, the White Company needs you.”
“But You Take What You Need…”
Days became weeks as the seasons changed in the Angle; Halbarad assiduously conducted his duties, even as he fretted his nights. A Northwoman came asking for her old friend Estel, a trader armoured with elven knives.
She stayed, and a kind of relationship developed between them, enough to share hearth and bed, enough to make time travel faster in each other’s company… Until each finally realised that all their talk, the tales told, the confidences exchanged… they were not really about each other… they were about Him.
They kissed goodbye one morning without regret, whispering in parting, “…for my King”.
