Éomer enjoyed fatherhood. Neither Éomer King, nor sire, to Elfwine he was Dada, and he found this title to be a favourite.
At three his son was still happy to hold his hand and chatter as they walked. These days, his chatter was mainly questions; what is that, who is that, why is that?
“Who am I?”
Well that was new!
“You are Elfwine.”
“But who is Elfwine?”
Éomer nearly said “You!” But thought ‘if a question is asked it should be answered.’
“I will tell you your bloodline, Elfwine, son of Éomer, son of Éomund and sister-son of Théoden….”
And on to the next...
“Dada….”
Éomer smiled. He wondered what question was about to come now from the child sitting on his shoulders.
An easier one to answer, he hoped, than “Why is the sky blue?” which had somewhat stumped him yesterday as they had taken this same walk down to the near pasture to visit some of the herd.
“Dada… what is Firefoot doing with… I think it is Meadowsweet…?”
Without his son’s higher vantage point Éomer couldn’t actually see; but he could all too easily guess.
So the old boy still had it in him - but just now Éomer wished he hadn’t!
And the third -
“Can I come and sit on your knee Dada?”
Éomer was about to discuss drainage problems with two elderly advisors. Probably not all that fascinating to a three-and-a-half-year-old boy.
But, then, it was never too early to learn kingship, he thought, and it might well brighten the meeting if Elfwine kept asking difficult questions…
However, best not to look too enthusiastic about his son joining them. “Why not go and sit on Mama’s knee?”
“I tried. But her tummy is too big and there isn’t room. And when I asked her why, she said ask you, it was your fault…”
