In total darkness, the light of a single candle can make all the difference. Great perspective on what was a shock to those experiencing it.

Thank you! Others have written about this, of course--what a shock the darkness was--but I was empathizing with the feeling very strongly during the last days. So relieved when the sun comes out and always a pang when I see that already it's setting again... It seems I would not make much of a Sinda!

Oh the poor things! I can so sympathise with Elemmire - I am like that on the rare occasions the electricity goes off in a storm - but I can keep everything burning as I know the light will return.

Yes, I sympathise with him strongly, too. We know the light will return--and he, at first, had no idea what had happened and later still did not know whether the light would return, ever!

...It was the hardest thing he had ever done. One by one he killed all those little flames again, except one-that he cupped reverently in trembling hands.

Beautiful bit of characterisation there in his realisation of what he must do to keep the light.
