Gildor was restless. They were expected days ago, but no sign of the travellers was evident.
Perhaps another sortie into the Borderlands…? It would do his horse good. Winter stabling was making him fat… and not just the horse!
He smiled ruefully.

Days in the saddle stretched cramped muscles, sharpened senses… enough to hear, before he saw, a Ranger in the bushes…

His burden rested lightly against the pommel, his horse scarce felt any difference, but Gildor knew. He carried the weighty fate of Middle-earth in his arms.

He could hear it… whispering seductively…

…drop this burden… take ME!

Mithrandir barely left the Halfling, other than to consult with Lord Elrond. The tensions in the upper levels of the House were palpable. No one wished the little one ill… but was this really their affair?

Gildor finally found Mithrandir alone, savouring a brief respite on a balcony with a pipe of weed.

“How goes it Gildor?”

“Well enough.”

“But…?”

“Mithrandir, Lord Elrond has opened his mind to me, and I confess, I felt some… suspicions…”

“And?” said Mithrandir sharply.

“It called me. It offered… more. More than…”

“I know. It offers me also. The secret is knowing… it lies.”
