Into the Shadows
The two comrades and the dog sneaked down the southeastern staircase, staying hidden in the shadows. Soon they were near the stables.
“Your gown shimmers in the moonlight, lady. We can cover our clothing with two groom's cloaks; they will be well worn and dark.”
She grabbed his arm, holding him back. “No, they cannot afford replacements. Take two horse blankets instead and give me your knife.”
As he walked into the darkened stable, he turned and saw her slicing the first layer of cloth off her elaborate dress. He smiled. She's tough, this lady from the sea, he thought.
