Climbing an apple tree in search of fruit, Elrond discovered a nightingale's nest, complete with a cluster of little brown eggs. The mother suddenly alighted on a branch scant inches from his face, to peer at him with bright, beady eyes. He blinked, and she sang a few notes, hopping back and forth on the branch as though she expected him to respond in kind.
Below, Gil-galad laughed. “What's wrong, Elrond? Don't you know its speech?”
Elrond scowled at him. “Do I look like Melian to you?”
“Actually,” said Lindir, “you really do.”
Elrond threw an apple at his head.
