Summary: He knew death was inevitable, he just wasn't prepared for it to come. So when it took the only person he needed and wanted, he was willing to follow.
A/N: Not my best or favorite, but I have a fondness for it seeing as how it was my first slash. Oh, how long ago that seems...
The sounds of my shoes hitting the gravel of the road and soon after the damp grass of the cemetery did nothing to comfort me. Not when your scream of pain still echoed in my ears. Sacrificing and loving brown eyes danced in my vision and I could see you, standing there. The relief, so swift and quick at first, is misplaced and only hurts me more when you fall to your knees. Your tan arm wraps around your torso, but not before I could smell and see the crimson blood that begins to spill.
My enhanced vision zeroes in on the demon that did this to you. My worry is nearly suffocating and I long to go be with you, but the demon would only cause more damage. Plus, I know you'll be alright, you're always alright. This thought does not contain my rage at your pain and I unleash it all on the demon. I first tear off its tail that's covered in sharp spikes; it is what struck you after all. After this I don't waste anymore time in killing it.
I run to you, leaving behind the decapitated body that oozes of green slime, and gather you in my arms. Now that my full attention was on you I could hear the weakening of your heart beat, the shallowness of your breaths. "Xander? Xander? Come on baby. Don't do this." Already the sense of death reeks in the air, circling around us.
"A-angel… love y-you." The words were broken and spluttered as he tried to force his eyes open and they only broke my heart more. "Oh no you don't. You can't say goodbye. Who will bicker with Spike and research with Giles? Who will make both Willow and Tara blush and Buffy smile? And what about Dawnie, you can't leave Dawnie. She still has to grow up; you still have to grow up before you go."
I purposely left myself out of the list of people that would miss him. If he was gone I wouldn't be around much longer to miss him, I would already be joining him. He didn't answer my desperate reasoning, only looked at me with bleary eyes and a comforting smile. Despite this he couldn't exactly hide the pain from my searching eyes. His eyes traveled behind me and I knew what he was looking at. The once dark sky was beginning to lighten up, the sun getting ready to rise. It was a welcome relief to all Sunnydale residents, though they were in denial as to why.
Yet I had I feeling this sunrise would bring no beauty or relief to neither of us. "L-love you… go. Now." He didn't have enough strength to put the demand into the word, instead it sounded as if it were a desperate plea. "I love you too, baby, I love you too. That's why I can't go." I could barely see a small amount of anger in his brown eyes; he knew what I planned to do. He looked as if he were planning to try to reason with me, either that or yell. But his eyes faded of all light and his body grew limp in my arms, his heart and breathing both vanishing into the early morning air.
My head found its way to his unmoving chest as I sobbed angrily into it. He wasn't supposed to leave me! I never moved my head from his chest, not when my senses yelled at me to move at the approaching dawn, not when the pain seared through my back, and not when the fire burned.
