There are physical consequences to being possessed by demons, up to and including the devil himself. There are consequences to being choked regularly and having your head bashed in repeatedly. Being thrown against a wall 150 times will have an effect on you. Using whiskey as an anaesthetic is possibly not going to help your liver either. Poor Sam, and then poor Bobby. I can see how this story would play out. I can cry for Sam and yet understand where his son is coming from. I'm sad that he was never able to build the relationship with his father that would have been positive for both of them. On the other hand, I'm glad that he's built his life so that he can cope and excel with those amazing Sam Winchester genes.

The bit that really hit me hard was this:

He looked up at the big picture over the fireplace, the one he really hated, Sam and three dead strangers looming over the place like they lived here, too. Sometimes, when he was younger, they'd seemed more welcome here than he did. Especially Uncle Dean.

See, that photo was something I loved in the finale, and it didn't occur to me that those faces would mean nothing to the boy who never met his Dad's family and who might possibly have been denied knowing that of his mom.

Kids often reject things that their parents value. Sam is better off with Dean in his heaven, but I hope Bobby somehow knows or comes to realize that he was loved, even in a really unhealthy, skewed way.
