“Don’t turn around anymore,” Juri warned, and chuckled at the way Jesse winced and pressed his nose back into his parchments. “You’re making an idiot of yourself,” he added, reached his quill across the said parchment, and dropped a huge puddle of ink on it - just to be an ass.

“Shut up,” Jesse murmured and cleaned the parchment with a swipe of his wand. “You know that I--”

“That you can’t help it, yes,” Juri said with a serious nod.

“I wasn’t going to say that.”

“But you thought so.”

Jesse looked at him darkly but did not say anything, and Juri chuckled again. A point for him, zero for the lovesick Romeo who still kept glancing behind every now and then.

Jesse knew he was being ridiculous and pitiful in every possible way but unfortunately Juri was right; he couldn’t really help himself.

It wasn’t his fault, he mentally defended himself and quickly glanced at the next table where the target of his feelings was doing his own homework, perfectly unaware of Jesse’s warm thoughts. It was definitely Hokuto’s own fault that Jesse couldn’t keep his eyes away from him. What other reason could have made Jesse fall in love with a Ravenclaw? Ravenclaws were clever bookworms; far from Jesse’s usual interests. Except that Hokuto wasn’t like that. He was clever but Jesse wouldn’t have called him a bookworm at all.

In the next table Hokuto suddenly looked up, and Jesse turned back to his own work, cursing silently when he felt his face starting to turn red.

Hadn’t he been so quick, he might have seen the small smile that grew on Hokuto’s face.

Hokuto leaned his head against his palm and chuckled. Poor guy, he thought.

Hokuto didn’t really know him in person but he knew a whole lot about him. He knew the boy’s name was Jesse, and that he was a Gryffindor, a year younger than Hokuto. And he knew Jesse was hopelessly in love with him.

Jesse would probably never be brave enough to confess but it kind of was because of Jesse himself that Hokuto knew about his feelings, as he had once overheard Jesse whining about it to Juri in the corridor.

Of course he had felt shocked at first but he had gotten used to the thought and started to pay attention to Jesse whenever he saw the boy. Eventually he had realized he wouldn’t mind if Jesse ever managed to actually talk to him. In fact, Hokuto himself was starting to be quite ready to confess to Jesse instead. There was just something in Jesse that stopped him.

Maybe that something was the quick glances that Hokuto felt rather than saw whenever they were in the same room just like this. Maybe it was the soft smile that Jesse clearly was unable to stop whenever their eyes accidentally met. Or maybe it was the way Jesse’s bare existence made Hokuto’s heart flutter nowadays. It was ridiculous but in the end Hokuto still wished Jesse would be the one confessing, and that was the reason he was still waiting.

In the Gryffindor table Jesse dipped his quill in the ink bottle and wrote a few more lines on his parchment, and Hokuto’s eyes darted on the hand holding the quill. Jesse was tall and skinny but he looked strong and reliable, and it wasn’t only once or twice that Hokuto had secretly wondered how those big hands would feel on his skin.

His thoughts were interrupted by an owl-shaped piece of parchment that flew towards him and landed neatly on the table in front of him. He tilted his head and opened the folds, revealing a short message written with small hasty letters. Surprised, Hokuto glanced up and saw Jesse who looked nervous and hopeful at the same time, and for once the boy didn't immediately turn his eyes away.

Need company for tomorrow’s Hogsmead visit?

Hokuto smiled and nodded, and a relieved smile spread on Jesse's face. He had just exceeded himself and Hokuto felt both thankful and strangely proud of him, along with the warm feeling that flowed inside him when he thought about the next day.
