Personally, I don't think the matches mean less - as completely fucking ridiculous as the tennis is, I'm still hanging on every fucking point in the last round of Nationals - but they certainly were [ less infuriating / more emotionally moving ] when it was mostly tennis, with less ridiculous DBZ-style bullshit. And you're right - Hametsu e no Rondo is totally ridiculous, but Atobe didn't rely on it to win the match. He just played some good (albeit ruthless) fucking tennis, and he defeated Tezuka. He's an amazing player, tbh, and I do miss the old matches.

And yeah, Atobe knows he's a right bastard. Brushing up on canon reminded me of the edge that he always seems to lose in fandom (even with me! I'll admit I'd forgotten it). He's got a good heart, yeah, and he's a nice guy, a generous guy. He also happens to be arrogant and capable of cruelty.

... He also happens to be hardcore in love with Tezuka, yeah. XD; I honestly think that the recklessness Tezuka showed in pursuit of Seigaku's victory lit a spark in Atobe. It gave him something to admire in Tezuka, besides his good tennis. He didn't seem too hot on Tezuka before that match, so I firmly believe that the real fixation (for him) started much later than Sanada's (which was, what, first fucking year, when Tezuka wiped the courts with him?). ... Those three are just stellar.

oh yeah, the matches still mean a count for the team to move forward... but it's just so... hard to take them seriously when bones are at risk. I think I used up all my suspension of disbelief with Tezuka's shoulder. I can buy that overexerting himself did that and it was plenty dramatic... but when people just.. keep getting injured, and using silly moves, I don't care. Compare Taka v. Kabaji with Taka v. Gin.

I get the feeling Atobe made that up to just show off, that it doesn't really have any use to him. like a "look what I can do" kind of thing, the bastard. fandom does to a lot different to him, and it turns me off of being involved in any of his popular pairings, despite actually liking Atobe quite a bit (barring of course, Kabaji/Atobe, because you are forced to look at the part of Atobe that demands a henchman to agree with him at all time). But Atobe does love his in circle. He's just kind of a bitch to everyone else (and he man-handles girls like An!)

allll the psychos fall for Tezuka, the poor guy. he just wants to play tennis, is that too much? I totally agree with you there, where Atobe first thought "heh that Tezuka guy I will crush" then realized how.. self-destructive he was and went "heh that Tezuka I will woo him with rosepetals." Or something like that XD

Yeeeeah, I didn't take Taka v. Gin seriously at all, but Taka v. Kabaji was plenty touching. I really do miss the old days; the awesome characters kept coming, but the tennis kinda jumped some sharks. (I swear there were actual sharks at some point.)

I love Atobe when he's done right - meaning in canon, mostly, and very little else. Somewhere along the line, I also learned to love fandom!Atobe, but he'll never quite compare. Fandom pairings tens to make me cringe, too - I love the Atobe/Tezuka vibe in canon, but it's never quite right in fandom. And don't get me started on things like Atobe/Jirou. (While I'll admit I ship it, I refuse to even look at the fandom for it anymore.) I came to love Kabaji/Atobe in time, too, when I came to love Kabaji.

Yeah, Tezuka's just getting dogged constantly, and it's kinda hysterical, since you're right: all he wants to do is play tennis. He's tennisexual. Atobe, on the other hand, has quite the eye for Tezuka, and probably will attempt to woo him with rosepetals come highschool, much to Tezuka's consternation. XD;
