I have seen IT

I saw Star Trek Into Darkness today.

Actually writing the name of the movie, I gotta say it didn't really click. Still pretty much in the darkness (eheheh) about what this title brings (nothing).

Contrary to what early sceptics were raging about, it is not a movie about shooting guns and explosions. As a Trek movie, it does revolve around an involved plot, lots of strategy twists and turns, some action (not including guns and explosions) and an amazing, let me repeat this, amazing performance as villain from Benedict fucking Cumberbatch. I say this, because although the role of John Harrison is pretty good and kickass, Benedict's performance takes it quite a few notches up into true stratosphere. The voice, the eyes, the chiselled pale face, the accent. I can absolutely see why he was cast so suddenly, instead of other possible actors, and it was not just fangirling. He brings true power, evilness and badassery to the role.

Spoiler wise I did pretty good. I knew nothing of plot or about the appearance of Nimoy. I was obviously spoiled for Khan. And this will deserve it's own rant (regarding spoilers, some of the actors, use of Khan and the Sherlock (Cumberbatch) fandom).

Unfortunately, my biggest peeve did come true in spades. It didn't rain, it poured. A cheeky wink to Trek hardcore fans? How about waving arms and pointing and doing anything to cram as many Trek references as possible. I was choking on references. I was bored of references. I was actually going from groaning to "WE GET IT, STOP IT!". Not amusing, not subtle and not done well.

What is the consequence of this? The movie didn't feel original, fresh, new. Same opening credits, same end credits, same opening theme and very similar score, same lettering, SAME SCENES (killed me, truly killed me, were they re-using cuts from 2009?).

Despite all this, I don't want to say my pet peeves detracted from my enjoyment or the overall quality of the movie (they are after all, just that, personal opinions), because they didn't (except one or two small moments).

I do want to note though, that I didn't feel very involved by the movie, which perhaps makes it easier to spot/misunderstand all these little tidbits that annoy me. And I mostly blame this not on the movie, but on the 3D. I found it very hard to concentrate, to be honest. It felt like it was endless close ups of faces (man, Chris Pine looked craggy and bloated), and blurry objects in front of the scene and a million other distracting things moving around (in my case this sadly included Cumberbatch and his face and his ass and his coat and him swishing around). tl;dr I was distracted by the 3D and Cumberbatch's ass. Cool.

In conclusion: WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW? I ONLY WATCHED IT ONCE AND I HAD TO GO TO THE TOILET HALF WAY IN. GET BACK TO ME IN 2 OR 3 VIEWINGS TIME. XD
