A taste of Sapporo

Feb 09, 2005 00:03

For those who haven't already read about it on lilitufire's journal, here is a taste of Sapporo's 56th Snow Festival...

Cut for size... A 15m high castle of snow! )

We certainly had a good time in Sapporo - if a little cold (blizzards)and wet (thawing snow) at times. The food up in Hokkaido, and particularly the seafood, is great.

There'll be more photos in my Sapporo Snow Festival gallery eventually.

Indeed! Though it was less cool last weekend than it might have been. This week's Sapporo forecast is for lows of -15C and highs of -5C...

Yes, but only if you can find a freezer large enough to transport it back to London in and sufficient workmen to transport it from Sapporo to a port. Dimensions are approximately 25m x 25m x 15m and weight is a few hundred tons!

Aside: The sculptures are built on a scaffold frame and then filled with snow using a snow-blower before the actual sculpting begins.

Hmm. I'll work on that.

Absolutely magnificent and a fanastic feat to create. Most impressed.

The pictures in the gallery are quite impressive, I like the one of the Norwegian parliament with lights either inside or behind it. Most groovy.
