Who: Rin and Kakashi
Where: Rin's apartment
When: Around dinner time last weekend
Warnings: So far nothing but who know where it will go from there....
Open?: No
Kakashi looks at his clock.. already 35 minutes late.. but that drama had been so good. Besides, he never really promised to call at a specific time. He types in the phone number sent to him and hits the green button, waiting
Rin jumped when she heard the phone ring. Fumbling with it she looked at the number. She didn't recognize it. "Kakashi?"
Kakashi pondering playing with his old friend for a moment, but he figured she might not be in the most understanding of moods right now. "It's me"
Rin sighed. "Thank goodness. I mean....Hi, So how was your day?" Rin absently started playing with her hair.
Kakashi had to resist the urge to chuckle, fearing Rin make take it the wrong way. He never felt so much like he was on pins and needles. "ehh.. sorry it took so long for me to get back to you, but there was this drama on.. and I've been fine, how about yourself?"
"Pretty good." Rin bit her bottom lip. Damn why was she nervous? It was Kakashi...ok that answered her question. "So, um do you want to maybe go get something to eat?"
Kakashi shifted his weight slightly, trying to think of what he might want to eat - he hadn't really eaten for the day. "Aren't you supposed to let me be the one asking you out?"
She blushed and thanked goodness he couldn't see it. "Well, then are you going to ask me out?"
He slowly turned over in his mind of where to go, but wasn't too sure just yet. "Would you like to go out for some dinner?"
"I would like that very much Kashi." She tried to sound as calm as possible and hoped her voice didn't give her away.
"Do you have a preference on what to eat?"
Rin thought. "Sounds silly, but how about getting some pizza? I have been craving it for a while."
Kakashi pondered this for a moment and decided it must be a test. "Certainly a doctor has higher tastes."
She smiled. "Sometimes. But sometimes a doctor just has a taste for something completely unhealthy. I have a friend who is pregnant. She was talking about it the other day and put the though in my head."
"Oh, I wasn't meaning you were eating healthy.. more of that you were able to afford more expensive unhealthy food. But with a pizza we could get carry out." Kakashi said, smiling slightly at thinking about getting her back over to his place.
"That is very true." She waited a second and weighed her next comment in her mind. "If it would be easier you could pick one up and come to my place. I e-mailed the address with my phone number. " Damn, was she too forward? "I mean, that's one option."
Kakashi thought about it for a second, and when she continued. "No no, that's fine.. I just remember how much you didn't like to clean, so I thought your place might be a bit.. uhh.."
She laughed. "Yeah well, since I'm not here that often it stays pretty clean. Plus I have a neighbor that comes in to um borrow things and from time to time she will clean asa thank you for free shoes."
Kakashi laughed slightly, thinking he was glad the two had aparently the same idea about wanting to stay in. "Well, that sounds good then. Where would you like pizza from that's nearby?"
"There is a place at the end of my block. If you want I can just run out there and pick it up when you are on your way over."
Kakashi had called from his cell, and was already on the way out of his place. "I'll grab it as I come over if it's not far away. I'm already heading out the door."
"Great, I'll see you then." Rin ran to the mirror and checked her hair...again.
Kakashi hung up the phone, pondering what kind of pizza he should get. He'd have time to think about it on the short ride through the subway to Rin's place, even though it wasn't all that far of a ride.
Rin checked her make-up, the apartment looked good, she had a bottle of wine chilling.
Kakashi came to the end of the line, walking back to the surface and heading to the pizza place, still with no idea of what pizza to get. In short order he was at the shop, peering in and seeing what other people were getting. He stepped inside and quickly ordered two pizzas. and waited for them to get done.
Rin checked the clock. It was taking a bit longer than she expected for him to get there. She walked to her nightstand and checked to see if she had everything they might need in case things went.....very well.
Kakashi laid back in the seat at the pizza place. Before he knew it, someone was shaking him. It was a store clerk, the one who took his order. He sat up, quickly coming to realize he'd dozed off.. oh shit, what time was it? He quickly glanced at his watch, he'd been there nearly 30 minutes! The woman informed him the pizzas were ready, and he should get going before they get any colder. He jumped up, paid the bill, and took the pizzas, flying out the door and towards Rin's place.
Rin started getting worried. Did something happen? Was he hurt? Lost? Worse yet...did he change his mind? She couldn't take it any longer and reached for her phone. She dialed the numbers and hit send.
Kakashi's phone buzzed, he didn't need to be told who it was, and frankly he was shocked she hadn't called before. But he was already in the elevator and considered for a moment not answering since he'd be right there. As he fumbled for his phone while holding the pizzas, it stopped buzzing. He was too late. "Oh, dear.." was all he could mutter, hoping to make it to her door before she managed to get in an elevator.
Rin grabbed her jacket and headed to the door. Tears were threatening to cloud her eyes. She really wished she wasn't wearing the 3 inch heels she picked...after all she didn't think running would be part of the night's plans. She ran through the door and toward the elevator. The elevator dinged, signaling that it had reached the floor. Kakashi stood waiting.. what felt like an eternity as the doors began to open. Rin heard the ding and thanked goodness she wouldn't have to wait for one. The doors slip open as she turned to enter.
Kakashi began to bolt out, but suddenly came to realize there was another body in front of him - Rin! He quickly lifted the pizzas up, to keep from hitting her with the boxes, and maneuvered towards her, sidestepping and yet colliding with her, his other hand coming around to the small of her back to ensure she wouldn't fall.
She mumbled out an "I'm sorry." It happened so fast Rin didn't have time to realize who had her until she looked up into his face. Her mouth went dry. "Ka.....Kakashi." Suddenly her heart was beating faster than normal.
"Er.. sorry about that Rin, but I couldn't get to my phone in time.” Kakashi said, becoming aware of the position the two were now in. He instinctively put a little pressure on her back, bringing her closer to him, but only just barely, as he shifted his weight to get better footing, realizing they were both still standing half in and out of the elevator, which was now yelling at them for holding up its dutiful progress.
Rin blushed. She realized her leg was almost wrapped around him as they twisted. She didn't move. "I......I got worried something bad might have happened like you know you rethought this."
Kakashi slowly tried to untwist from Rin, unsure if she still wanted to be held like this. He moved slowly into the hall, allowing the doors to close.
Rin straightened her skirt and fixed any hair that might have gotten out of place. "So um, did you find the place ok?"
"Oh yes, I just.. took a short nap, inside of the pizza shop." Most people would've flushed, but Kakashi had long since given up that ordeal.
Rin's looked at him. "Asleep? That excited about tonight huh?" She unlocked the door and let him in. "You can put hte pizza over there. what would you like to drink?
Kakashi sat the pizza down, heading over to the kitchen with Rin, looking around her place and admiring the home she never claimed to live in. "I'm not sure..water, tea? What do you have?"
Rin watched him...and enjoyed it. "um, water, tea," she opened the fridge and looked in "and if my friend Anko did not finish them off soda, red wine, vodka, and sake. Take your pick."
"Vodka?" Kakashi questioned. He wasn't sure if he should be impressed or frightened by such a thing in Rin's fridge. People do change a lot, and doctors are under a lot of stress, he thought to himself. "I think I'll take a soda. Wouldn't be pizza without it!"
Rin smirked as she took some soda out of the fridge. "My friend Kurenai is pregnant. It was sitting in her house and I didn't want it to go to waste. It was a new bottle and she only buys the good stuff."
Kakashi Humm'd, tilting his head slightly to size up that statement. "That still doesn't explain why you have it. Have you even taken a drink of it yet?" Oops.. maybe that was a bit harsh, but.. too late.
She instantly turned a shade of red. "I...I...Well, she enjoys ....Kure...." She let out a sigh of frustration..."Well, no I haven't." No one could fluster her like Kakashi. Kakashi resisted the temptation to just nod like Mr. Know it all. That never seemed to get things solved, and right now he wanted to make sure Rin wasn't going away again. Screwing up now.. well, not acceptable. So he chuckled inwardly and proposed, "Perhaps we can crack it open some day and celebrate our reunion." Ohh.. what a lame one-liner!
"I would like that." She felt her cheeks get warmer as she crossed to the cabinet to reach up and pull out a couple of plates and glasses. Suddenly she felt like she was an akward fourteen year old again.
Kakashi sat stunned for a moment, glad she was looking away as he couldn't help but feel his heart thump a little harder. "Well, at least we have plans for a second date already." Kakashi hoped she'd agree to going out with him before he had a chance to make a fool of himself on THIS date. Though sleeping in the pizza store nearly stopped the date before it happened..
Second date? Rin fumbled with the glass in her hand and almost dropped it. "Planning a head is a good thing." She tapped her fingernails on the glass for a moment. "Is it feeling really warm in here to you?"
"It's a bit warm, but I thought maybe it was just because I'd been outside, sprinting to get here at top speed..." Kakashi managed to stumble out. "Are you feeling hot too?"
"Suddenly I am a bit warm. It..It is probably just from running to the elevator." Or the fact that you of all people are standing here. Damn blue looks good on you, she thought to herself. She grabbed the plates and walked with him to the living room near the pizza. "So, um why did you go into teaching."
Kakashi tried hard not to lean towards her. It felt so odd to him, not seeing her for so long. yet in stead of wanting to argue like they you used, over the petty things, he wanted to curl into her and just be.. happy, truly so. It wasn't till they sat down that her question really registered with him, and he thought, trying to put on a studious face for a moment as he opened the pizza box and offered her a slice.
She took the slice and thanked him. "I mean, not that I can't imagine you being a teacher or anything. i mean it makes sense you were always the smartest person I knew and the way you always helped me with math." She was babbling and she knew it. She took a bite of the pizza to shut herself up.
Kakashi chuckled slightly, amused at Rin, glad that she was feeling a bit under pressure here, too. "Well, I think I became one because I never really grew up. I never wanted to leave high school. Teaching kids was a good excuse to stay, and since everyone hates history, I figured it might be a challenge to make it interesting. I'm not so sure that plan came to fruition, but I haven't heard many complaints." He was satisfied with this answer, though he hoped it wouldn't sound overly whiney.
"Enjoyed high school that much huh? I'm sure you are interesting to your students." She giggled. She actually giggled. She was becoming one of those girls she and Anko made fun of at the bar.
"Ehh.. Well, it was when you were around, still. I guess I'd hoped to be able to stop kids from making my mistake and letting her walk away from you without at least saying something" Kakashi blurted out. Was he back in high school? He felt like some hormonal teenager awkwardly confessing his love to a girl who didn't even know him. He needed to take a step back and clear his head before he made the situation any worse.
She put her plate down on the table. "It wasn't your mistake Kashi. I shouldn't have left or I should have said something." She looked down. "I was a coward. I'm sorry."
Kakashi looked over at her, trying to find her eyes, which wasn't easy when she looked down. He didn't like her being upset like this, but he just had to mention her leaving again. Idiot. "No no, I was the coward. If I'd said anything to you then..."
She looked up at him. "Then we would of had pizza a lot sooner?"
"Well..." he considered, trying to keep her on edge, enjoying having her eyes on him. After a nice dramatic pause, he continued "I'm not sure it would've been pizza back then. Maybe sushi. Maybe just some rice. I didn't have that much money to toss around on dating." he laughed, hoping he could pick her spirit back up some.
She broke into a huge smile and laughed. "Sushi? Really? I would have thought ramen." She started playing with the ends of her hair. She stopped herself. Damn it she was an adult. A respected doctor not a cheerleader on her first date.
"Oh come on now, I've got SOME class. Although I've become a fan of the ramen as of late.. at this one particular shop. One of my student's favorite places, so anytime he goes somewhere, it's there." Kakashi said, thinking back to the yellow-haired kid... Naruto was his name. He shook his head slightly, a coy smile on his face.
"That's cute." She went to take a bite but stopped. "The student that loves ramen not that you have some class. I mean not that you don't have class. You have class. I ah....I'm going to eat now." She took another bite. God she was a dork.
Kakashi finally took a bite, mostly to keep from laughing at Rin's cute face. He was sure she always looked that cute when she fumbled over words, he just wasn't sure why he'd never noticed it before. He chewed the pizza slowly, savoring the first bite, going so far as to close his eyes, something he didn't realize he was doing until he'd already done it for a few seconds.
She touched his leg. "You going to fall asleep here too?" She smiled.
The touch aroused his attentions.. in more way than one. He had to stop pror to swallowing the food, lest he choke to death on it right then and there. He looked at her and tried to talk through the mouthful. "I awways twy two enjwoy dwe fwrst.." He finally managed to swallow without fear of failure, having already said just about everything, he finished up anyways. "...bite"
"A man that knows how o savor things. I like that." She took a drink of her soda. "So you have changed a bit."
He followed her drink with one of his own, imagining for a moment that they were sharing a soda rather than separate, and he almost grabbed her soda while thinking this. "Well, I learned to enjoy what I had around me, rather than letting it go to waste, when I lived out in the country. It's how I wanted to be if I'd had a chance to repeat high school with you again."
"Well, you know we are well past high school but I like that idea of enjoying what is around us." She couldn't take her eyes off of him.
"It is nice, but it tends to make you late for everything. I guess everyone needs a flaw, though, and being late consistently means everyone knows to plan for my lateness. So in the end it balances out." Kakashi wasn't sure why he was going on and on about himself.. but Rin wasn't giving him a chance to get in a question about her. He'd just have to find a good time to get to know more about her. For now, there was more pizza to be eaten. Barely a bite in, and it was already getting cool.
"Of all the flaws you could have being late isn't that bad of one." She smirked. "Gives a girl more time to pick which shoes to wear."
