This week, Al took her first steps in the wider world of a college graduate by starting at her new job. She's an education recruiter for a Central Florida university that specializes in distance learning. She's getting a very good starting salary, insurance, vacation, and a retirement plan. She's also been spending this past week training for her job.
She's got to make it through her 90 day probationary period (most of which involves training for her position), and then she'll have some real security for the first time in her life. And speaking of insecurity ..... Just Younger Sis isn't doing well with Al's foray into responsible adulthood. She blew up at Al about a week ago and hasn't talked to her since. There never seems to be any joy in Al's life that her mother can't harsh or create insecurity over.
Work has been busy this week. I'm finally feeling like myself again - if still a little tired - and it's a good thing, too. It's been kind of a rough week, especially today. I'm thinking that, perhaps, there might be a full moon out or the severe weather swing is messing with them. The first 4 hours of work were very chaotic. Someone came in with a child and came back out 15 minutes later wanting a refund. The child didn't like the animatronics. Apparently, this upset the child so much, that they didn't want to stick around for the hands-on activities on the 2nd floor nor the planetarium show.
On the other hand, there was a small group of severely disabled patrons and their attendants who came into work today. There were 6 in the group total (3 patrons and their 3 attendants). I rang them up at the Front Desk, then ended up seeing them later on the Art Floor. Everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves.
When we closed up everything for the day, we also had to get the 1st floor ready for a wedding reception. A former employee was getting married, so she rented out the 1st floor for the reception .... and wanted the dinosaurs left on for the night. When I left, the caterers were setting up things in the dino area. I teased my boss and said I hope the guests don't try to feed the dinos like the Girl Scouts do during the camp-ins. (We've come in to find bits of the decorative grasses and leaves in the dinos mouths on Saturday mornings.)
Other than work and the news about Lil' Graduate, things have been slow on the homefront. The weather hasn't permitted me to go out and putz around in the yard. I've been diligently working on my filet crochet curtains. There's been more reading of manga than books off the Reading List. And M introduced me to a fantastic little time sink on Facebook called Treasure Madness. It truly is a time sink, too! While I've seen others play Farmville for hours and hours, I've never had the patience to sit that long and play it. Treasure Madness is a whole different magilla! I keep finding myself walking back and forth between household chores and the computer every couple of hours. As long as I'm having fun and not playing it at work, I guess it's all good.
Tomorrow is my Sunday off. It seems I'm more likely to work all day on Saturdays and get Sundays off. I don't know how well this is going to turn out for the others, though. During this past week, they've cut the afternoon shift's hours by 30 minutes. Instead of two 4 hour shifts (AM Shift, PM shift), it's now a 4 hour AM Shift and a 3 1/2 hour PM Shift. I'm usually working the morning shift, too. I haven't heard any grumbling about hours yet, but there might be in another week when our paychecks hit.
Other than sending out birthday wishes to someone halfway around the world, I expect Sunday to be a slow day. Hopefully with some chores getting done after sleeping in late.
lil graduate on the move,
work work work,
a new time sink,
