A Major Summer Accomplishment Already

Woo Hoo! I just finished reading my 13th book for my 101 Things in 1001 Days list.

At least try faking your enthusiasm over my achievement. ;D

Earlier, I finished reading "The Letters of John and Abigail Adams." A book that I've been reading a little bit from every night for the past month ... which I think I've mentioned in a previous post. The editors chose to end the book just as John is coming back from the Treaty negotiations that officially ended the Revolutionary War.

It was a pretty tough read in some spots. Not because of the archaic writing style or lack of explanations (there were endnotes for people and events). More for the emotions that the letters contained. It was tough for Abigail to spend anniversary after anniversary alone at the farm for the better part of five years, while John was out being a statesman. It was primarily to her excellent management and shrewd business skills that the family managed to keep their Braintree farm and made a decent living. And when you consider that most of the Founding Fathers ended up destitute or broken men at the end of their lives, Abigail seems more mythological than real. Yet, she was real and wrote of dangerous realities she faced while alone with her children in the middle of drought, siege and epidemics.

Other than reading (I've knocked off a short manga series called Buso Renkin and the latest volume of Me and My Brothers), I haven't done much of anything else except sleep during this first week of Summer Break. M thinks I shouldn't worry about it and keep sleeping until I stop. I can't say that I disagree with him on that. This last month of school really took more out of me that I thought. I might actually pay attention this time and rest up for a little while longer.

I think I'll still ride this reading bandwagon for a while. There's a few more books that are looking interesting and I've got a couple of stacks of manga that I ought to start reading, too. (About three different series with - at least - ten volumes in each.) I don't include the manga on my 20 Books goal, but it is nice to have the time to sit for an afternoon and just pull books off a stack, one after another.

american history, read 20 books, 101 things in 1001 days, ja & aa
