Well said.

Even if it is a cartoon squirrel saying it.

While I agree with the basic thrust of the....cartoon squirel, I think that some reporters do in fact help more by shining a spotlight and asking questions. Would any of us know the extent of damage if not for reporters? Think about the relief effort that is garnered by traumatic photos and video.
Also Scott, I really urge you (and anyone else) to download this clip from CNN in which Anderson Cooper lays into a Senator from Louisiana, it really is heart felt, it seems as if he is a step away from losing it and the best part is this :

COOPER: Excuse me, Senator, I'm sorry for interrupting. I haven't heard that, because, for the last four days, I've been seeing dead bodies in the streets here in Mississippi. And to listen to politicians thanking each other and complimenting each other, you know, I got to tell you, there are a lot of people here who are very upset, and very angry, and very frustrated.

And when they hear politicians slap -- you know, thanking one another, it just, you know, it kind of cuts them the wrong way right now, because literally there was a body on the streets of this town yesterday being eaten by rats because this woman had been laying in the street for 48 hours. And there's not enough facilities to take her up.

So while most reporters are make up wearing behind shiny desk reporting robots, every now and then there is one on the ground trying to shine a light on things and in turn, gets help.

Also, I would believe that iwillpress.com "Foamy's" owner, can only escape hypocrisy if say, he at least donates one week's worth of his ad revenue, merchandise and other revenues to the victims in the Gulf. I mean, by having that cartoon itself he is making money from garnering traffic, on top of that he is criticizing actions that he himself should be doing.

Have you donated Scott?

I mean, after all, by posting a LJ that you agree with a cartoon squirrel about the situation, we wouldnt want you to be...hypocritical ;-)

Anderson Cooper does NOT represent most journalist. He is the only one I've seen thusfar, but then again I'm mostly watching CNN, show any compassion towards these people at all. Only a VERY small portion of them are even talking to the government or FEMA or Red Cross at all. Most of them are sticking mics in the faces of very tired and very angry people asking them to tell them everything that has happened to them when all they want to do is shower and sleep. That to me is helping no one. I saw views of news people just sitting there filming people in trouble, not budging to go help them out, just filming. That is not helping us, that is not helping them. Video tape someone going to help that person out if you must video tape something, I know you have more than 1 person on your crew. It's just frustrating that these people are right there and aren't doing a damn thing to help out.

Anderson Cooper on the other hand is my news journalist hero.

I agree with what you say. My point was/is how would we have even known about the hurricane, and definitely the extent of the damage, if not for the news and their reporters?

I mean, couldn't you draw a parallel between reporters sitting back and just filming and not helping, and say....punk/indie bands that write songs that complain about the government and society and in turn, don't or barely contribute anything to help the problem they are bitching about?

I agree, Anderson Cooper really does kick ass, even if you watch his show during "normal" conditions.

Maybe he's so cool because he's gay :)

I agree with you, yes, we do need to know what is going on, but there is a point where it stops becoming pertinent news and becomes a ratings game. That's where we are now. I was watching the other night and some reporter was talking to one of the nurses or doctors at the airport, or makeshift hospital in Nola.

Reporter: "So are there people here who won't make it?"

Guy: "I'd rather not speculate that."

Reporter: "How many will die?"

Guy: *looking pissed and really tired* "I don't know" and walks off.

That pissed me off. They keep asking how many are dead, how many will die, it's all over sensationalized, just let the people be ya know.
