Psycho-Pass fic recs

Oct 17, 2014 21:13

In light of season two starting (finally!), I was in the mood to read some fics, and so went through most of the stories on AO3 just because I could ^.^ I did skip all the non-English ones (so much Russian O.o) as well as the pairings I didn’t feel like reading (e.g. Akane romantically with anyone). Intended to also look through fanfiction.net, but I kinda ran the other way upon seeing that the five most favorited stories involved OCs ^^; Which is why, with one exception, these recs are all from AO3. So let’s get to it!

-------

Unconventional Normality by scorchedtrees

Summary: AU: In which Akane joins Division Four to work alongside Inspector Makishima.

Comments: Tied for my favorite PP fic. I do love me some crack-ish AUs ^.^ It’s more happy fun times all around than crack, but I still wore a goofy smile throughout. Very heartwarming to see everyone alive and getting along (mostly) in the MWPSB’s most laidback Division. And that last drabble with ChoeMaki arguing over who shoots the bad guy… XD

Bloody Valentine by polyphenols

Summary: The lives, literary discussions, and love triangles(?) of three criminal minds, before and after Touma's capture and re-emergence. Written in February 2013.

Comments: Tied for my favorite PP fic because I love it, love it, love it (and might actually love this more). Pretty awesome how it takes place over the span of a few years and so neatly ties in with the canonical events. Of course I was reading for my beloved ChoeMaki, but the characterizations and dynamics between those two and Touma were just all wonderful and incredibly well-written <3

Salvage by viascos

Summary: After the events that transpire at the granary, Yayoi needs to pull what is left of the mission back from the edge.

Comments: I needed this! The missing scene of Yayoi’s actions after Akane runs off to Kougami and Makishima. Great to see Yayoi in her element - staying so strong even when her emotions are in turmoil, and doing her best to provide immediate support for a broken Gino. And that stomach-turning description of Gino’s arm… >.<

Once More Into the Drift by ch1ps0h0y

Summary: After losing two partners to kaiju attacks, Kougami didn't think he'd find a third who could salve the trauma they left behind.
Or, "There's always time for philosophy when giant sea-dwelling monsters are laying waste to civilisation as we know it."

Comments: Pacific Rim is still on my To Watch list, but I wanna see it even more now >.< Wonderful combination of action and philosophy, as well as present events and flashbacks. The interactions between Kougami and Makishima are just spot-on, the pacing is good, and I especially love the cameos from the other characters.

Additional recs from ch1ps0h0y: I did like the ChoeMaki fic, but gonna rec the one where Choe’s a zookeeper (crack ftw) and the Assassin’s Creed inspired one (yay for action).

This is How by KaraMergen

Summary: An AU where the Sibyl System doesn't exist, Kagari and Choe are a pair of happy bickering co-workers, and Midou is (still) a confused geek.

Comments: Amusing as heck. I’ve always liked Kagari and Choe having a bromance, so what’s one step further (and bonus if Choe’s the uke)? XD Enjoyed this fic in particular because it’s from Midou’s POV. The guy didn’t get a lot of screen time, much less in fics, so him (and the Spooky Boogie girl) playing the third party observer is win.

Additional recs from KaraMergen: another modern day AU with KagaChoe (I can see it now~), and the one where Makishima meets Kyubey (that little f#cker).

intangible by geassevoker

Summary: The way Inspector Tsunemori Akane carried herself was just amazing. Hinakawa Sho and his impressions of her. Written before episode 2.

Comments: I applaud geassevoker for writing about a character that has basically been around for all of one minute. And you know what? I really like the headcanon ideas for the kid’s personality :D His hero-worship of Akane is downright adorable, and I might just be disappointed if all of this doesn’t come to pass in the future episodes.

Reunion by xnightrainx

Summary: Because the helmet misses its dearest creator. (HelmetxMakishima)

Comments: Crack fics are just the best, and crack pairings even more so. Hadn’t considered this one before reading, but it’s safe to say that I’ve found my newest OTP. The helmet’s “overwhelming love” for its creator… XD Short, but so amusing. Random sentence because it’s annoying if all my comments aren’t about the same length.

Additional recs from xnightrainx:  the KougamixHospital Bed one (what can I say? I love my crack pairings), and the genderbent version of the Most Dangerous Game episode (keep the crack coming).

-------

And here are a few honorable mentions. I personally didn’t fall head-over-heels in love with them, but still thought they were good.

The Adventure of the Empty Man by Eternal

Summary: Sherlock systematically burns out the remnants of Moriarty's empire in Japan. Impeded by Sibyl, Oracle's sister system, hounded by Moran and taunted by Kogami's oldest adversary Makishima, Sherlock must rely on the support of the MWPSB before he can return to Britain.

Comments: Interesting crossover. Why does is it not surprising that Sherlock has a ridiculously high Crime Coefficient? XD And when you throw Makishima into the mix… well, things can get even crazier. Random favorite part was Sherlock blasting Makishima with a fire extinguisher (it make slightly more sense in context).

Shadows by amuk

Summary: Akane has only ever known him for his shadows. -Tsunemori, Kogami, and the ghosts inbetween

Comments: A rather heartbreaking look at how Akane deals with her ghosts (well, shadows). This one stood out for me because Akane is not affected by Kougami alone; it’s Yuki and Kagari and Masaoka and all of them haunting Akane as well as Gino. Thank goodness amuk didn’t stop at just Kougami as originally planned.

In Darkest Red by petaldancing

Summary: Yayoi tries to give a reason to all of this, but that is just one more thing she's already lost.

Comments: I have a soft spot for Yayoi/Shion fics for some reason. But in any case, a very nice look at the moments between them, starting from when they first met. I really like the characterizations during their interactions, how they gradually become closer despite the differences in personality, and also the repeated motif of the red.

The Ghost in Her Machine by yavanei

Summary: He was hollowing her out, stealing the comfort of her solitary peace night after night. He cut into her, butchered her, and mutilated her, as if he hoped her heart would look like his in the morning. Perhaps, she vaguely thought, he was the ocean personified. Serene and mercurial. Tranquil and deadly. Pulling Akane down with him, and drowning her beneath the inky blackness of his heart.

Comments: Another look at how Akane copes in the aftermath of season one. Notable because of how dark it is, and also because Akane vs Makishima is so often overshadowed by Kougami vs Makishima. Much respect for Akane’s ever clear Hue, and let’s just say I’m truly grateful my dreams are nowhere near as vivid as hers.

quantum indeterminacy by Kariosity

Summary: The question is just who's saving whom, here.

Comments: I read this as a gen fic between Kougami and Akane (though the relationship is still sweet enough for romance). The profiling lessons are just fascinating, and it’s a wonderful addition to the canon events because we don’t really get to see Akane learning how to profile besides that one episode with Saiga. Nice Sasayama flashback too.

So yeah, those are all the fic recs that I have for PP. Maybe I’ll update this once season two is over. Or maybe I’ll be too lazy XD But in any case, thanks for reading, and take care! (Oh, and please feel free to let me know if any of the links are wrong/broken)
