Character History: Makoto was just your average high school girl. She often overslept and ran late, didn't always study hard enough and enjoyed hanging out with her friends. However, one day while in the science lab she tripped and landed on a tiny device that granted her the ability to leap through time to the past. Her first leap saved her life when her bike brakes gave out and threw her into oncoming trains. When consulting her aunt about the strange phenomenon the older woman says that it has happened to her before and that it happens to girls her age, but Makoto doesn't believe she's taking her seriously. Through trial and error Makoto learns how to control the time leap and begins using it to help her grades and have more time to do fun things like karaoke and play catch with her friends. However, she begins to learn the consequences of her reckless leaping when a fellow student is being harassed and her friend Yuri gets hurt because of the choices she made. Through discussion with her aunt, Makoto begins to realize that what she does for herself effects others and she then tries to focus on using her leaping to help another student instead of on her self.
Personality:
Makoto is a cheerful, mostly carefree teenage girl in personality. She likes spending time with friends and pretty much bombs at math and English. She is quite animated in the way she acts and responds to others, getting excited or annoyed rather quickly, usually wearing her heart on her sleeve. Often she can be a bit brash as she doesn't always think things through 100% before saying or doing something, responding more with her emotions, such as when she kept leaping to try and avoid Chiaki asking her out and began to just avoid him altogether. She was afraid of things changing between her and her friends, but instead of confronting the situation, she ran instead. When Chiaki asks Yuri out instead Makoto becomes jealous, hurt and angry without realizing why exactly. While she would say she's fine her attitude and actions showed otherwise.
When she gains the ability to time leap Makoto uses her new power rather recklessly and selfishly. When discussing her time leaping activities with her aunt, she just dismisses the older womans warnings. Well, at least until she starts seeing the consequences of her actions and she sobers up at bit, showing that while she enjoyed wanting to have fun she is able to see her mistakes. She might not directly own up to them at first, but she knows she needs to fix things which shows she has compassion and a drive to do what's right for her friends and classmates that have been wronged by her actions.
What makes Makoto unique as a character is that she's really more of your average kind of teenager. She doesn't have super powers or magic spells up her sleeve. She oversleeps all the time, is just okay at school and likes playing catch with her friends. She even sees herself as pretty average. Early in the film she comments on how she's not really smart, but not stupid either. She's not graceful, but not so clumsy that it's comical. She considers herself to be pretty lucky most of the time, so when she has bad luck it's pretty bad. She recognizes her own faults, but doesn't consider them bad or anything, just realizes that they're there and she works to make the best of them.
Throughout the majority of the movie Makoto seems to have no idea what she wants to do later in life. When Yuri asks her about her major, Makoto replies she doesn't know and is clearly relieved to know that Yuri doesn't either. Shortly after that when Kosuke asks she jokes and says maybe she'll run a hotel or become an oil tycoon. After she starts leaping she changes her answer to Yuri saying that she'd want to be an oversea student, which Yuri comments that Makoto failed her English proficiency test which shows that Makoto is still not thinking seriously about her future.
While she eventually figures out what she wants to do by the end of the film, I will be pulling her from before that so she'll still be unsure about her future and what she wants to focus on.
Makoto's downfall and faults are similar to those that many have. When she's given the power to time leap she focuses on having fun without thinking about the consequences. Even though she's given subtle warning from her aunt, she chooses to ignore it. This sort of disregard is somewhat common among teenagers her age who believe they're invincible until something big comes and slaps some reality into their face. Makoto's reality slap comes in smaller pinches first. She sees a classmate getting teased by others due to her having him switch roles with her during cooking class one day. Chiaki starts dating Yuri after she leaps and leaps to avoid his confession and starts avoiding him altogether. Yuri gets injured when the teased classmate goes to far and tries to hurt Makoto and Makoto uses her leap to try and avoid it.
Even though she realizes that her using the leap is hurting others, she still relies on it to try and fix things when she should really stop using it. She eventually gets the full on slap near the end of the film when all her leaping ends up having Chiaki disappear, but she's taken shortly before that so she won't have that bit of development here.

Well she had certainly done it now, hadn't she? It would make sense that all of the successive leaping would catch up to her eventually, but she never really considered the possibility of it actually happening. Her aunt had never subtly warned her of any such thing either. Why should she have worried? Now was the perfect time to be worrying though. After all, she was trapped in that crazy looking time space place.
Usually, she just rolled from one point of time right into another. A piece of cake! Yes, it had taken some time to get over the act of throwing herself off a ledge or jumping towards the river. Yes, it had taken even more time to get used to rolling into usually painful objects and smacking her head, or back, or arm, or side into them... Ahh, but now she was a pro at it!
A pro who was now just aimlessly floating around in a plane of ticking time strips and clicking gears.
Makoto groaned with a hint of despair as she attempted to move herself closer to one of the red and black rolls of moving time. However, it didn't do her much good. She just hovered there, too far from any of them to pull herself back to reality. The girl pulled at her hair in frustration and kicked around a bit as she loudly complained to the still moving gears and strips.
"I just wanted to help my friends! I wasn't doing any of this for you know!! Come on, send me back! I'll stop leaping okay? Just send me hoooooooome!!! SEND ME HOME!!"
Suddenly, everything stopped. The constantly moving red numbers paused and the gear pieces froze mid-movement. Makoto looked around wildly, jerking her head from one side to the other. Great. Now she had broken time altogether somehow.
Why didn't she listen to her aunt for once? Maybe if she had, she wouldn't be in this crazy situation. Would anyone miss her? Would anyone even realize she was gone? Was she really gone? Was time even still moving back home? Or had she just messed up the entire world?
"I should have paid more attention in science class..."
Frowning she let her head fall back and that's when she caught sight of an ornate box hovering a few inches from her face. Managing to flip herself around she reached out and took it in her hands, turning it around with a scrutinizing look. Catching sight of the key in the side and the hinges she recalled seeing one like this in her grandmothers house as a child.
"A music box? What the heck is something like this doing here?"
Her curiosity went into full drive as she wondered if it was related to her time powers, or some other greater power that had given her, her own. With a slight shrug she brushed off her suspicions about the object and turned the key. After all, she was trapped in time space, what else did she have to lose at this point?
