Previous track.
Souji: Ah. What a terrible day. First it's running after a laundry store owner, then it's listening to Hijikata-san's long, long preaching.
Saitou: If you didn't saying those irrelevant things, it would have ended sooner. Don't you think so?
Souji: That's too much to ask of me. For me to not say anything in front of him, it's like asking a fish not to swim.
Saitou: I don't understand what you're trying to do. It looks like you're choosing words that irritate the Vice Commander most.
Souji: From this aspect, I think Saitou-kun topped me today. "What's the meaning behind this line." When hearing that, Hijikata-san's expression was priceless. I couldn't have done better with any question asked on purpose.
Saitou: That's... I think it's my carelessness to blame. However, why did the Vice Commander react like that? I don't understand.
Souji: Isn't it better if you don't? If you do understand, then you'd be the same as me. That would really give Hijikata-san a headache. Wait, that sounds fun.
Saitou: I don't get it. You're stealing the Vice Commander's haiku collection, and memorizing the haiku in it word by word, without mistakes. That's too much hassle for teasing someone you dislike.
Souji: Heh? Did I ever say I dislike Hijikata-san?
Saitou: Isn't that how it seems?
Souji: I suppose... It's getting hot. I'll open the window.
(Sound from outside flow in: Men cheering, children laughing and running, and their parents chasing after them.)
Souji: It's festival today. And we're grounded on a day like this. That shows how treacherous he is. Those children returning from the festival seem to enjoy it so much. Have you been to a festival when you were a child?
Saitou: Who knows?
Souji: Aww, how cold. Well, I can't imagine Saitou-kun getting all excited about festival either.
Saitou: Have you been to one?
Souji: I have. Once when I was so little that I barely remember a thing. After I became private pupil of Shieikan, Kondou-san took me there, which was the second time.
Saitou: That's all? Since it's you, I thought you would go every year.
Souji: Although I'm a private pupil, I was driven around like a servant. When the children in the neighborhood about my age were playing, I only have memories of doing laundries, cleaning the dojo, and looking after the older pupils.
Saitou: I see.
Souji: What do you mean by "I see"?
Saitou: I think I understand why you play with children so much.
Souji: Since I don't have memories of playing with children of my age, I'm making up for it now? I'd prefer you don't make simplified analysis like that.
Saitou: I don't recall saying anything as such. Does your story end here?
Souji: Among the pupils in Shieikan, I'm the youngest. So I got beat up with wooden sword whenever the older ones weren't in a good mood, or using sword practice as an excuse. Although I tried to fight back, a child's strength is no match for grown-ups. The pupils in Shieikan are rough guys... Well, Shinsengumi isn't too different. When I hid behind the dojo with bruises and wounds all over, crying from feeling frustrated, Kondou-san would appear by my side, rubbing my head and gently saying, "Souji, the real strong ones are always alone. Don't take loneliness as hardship. You know loneliness well and would doubtlessly become stronger than anyone else." So I began to think, for this man, I can, and I will, become stronger than anyone else. However, the person Kondou-san trusts most is that certain somebody who's treacherous, self-centered, self-absorbed, and enjoys writing crappy haiku. So isn't it reasonable for me to be a little mischievous?
Saitou: Um. Well, in your case I think it's more than a little. Speaking of haiku, that reminds me, why did you tell the Vice Commander that I have the Hogyoku Haiku Collection?
Souji: What do you mean why? Saitou-kun was indeed the one holding it.
Saitou: You knew I was strictly ordered not to read it, yet you still ratted me out in that situation. Isn't that betrayal?
Souji: Ha ha. That's right. Sorry. Sorry. Now, you didn't get scolded much. Isn't that nice?
Saitou: I shouldn't have accepted your offer, taken in by your glib talk, and let my curiosity get the better of me. In the end I not only didn't get what I wanted, but also lost the Vice Commander's trust. What a chain of disaster.
Souji: Now... now. Don't be so angry. Tell you what. I've memorized all of them. I'll recite them for you.
Saitou: But the Vice Commander said to forget about haiku.
Souji: It's alright. I'll read them slowly so it'll be easier for Saitou-kun to remember. Listen carefully.
(Souji starts reciting loudly, starting from the first line, one by one.)
(Another window opens)
Hijikata: Souji!! Don't recite my haiku with the window full open!!
Inoue: Thus the uniform came back safe and sound. I'm relieved it didn't turn out serious. Sannan-san is such a tactician. Recently nothing big happened, and everyone got too relaxed. It's good to raise the tension a bit. Anyway, chores like cleaning, washing, and cooking sure increased. It'd be nice if there's a caring girl to help out. But is there any girl who would want to work in an inelegant place like this?
Personal comments:
1. It's rare for Souji to be so talkative, and so serious too. Saitou is a good listener. He's barely talking... until he's reminded of the mess Souji dragged him into. Surprisingly Souji apologized as soon as he realized he crossed the line, and even tried to lighten him up.
2. Souji's admiration towards Kondou is clear, but he has such mixed feelings toward Hijikata. He even changed the subject halfway.
"It's getting hot"? This story took place sometime between November and January! XD
3. Aww. I wanna see Kondou-san taking little Souji to the festival. >w<
4. Why are they chatting together? I thought they're supposed to be grounded in their own rooms. XD
Hmm... not sure if they each have a room though. Because in history, there weren't enough rooms in Yagi's and Maekawa's houses, so each room was crammed with 3~8 men, including the executives. It's so crowded that "when getting up at night trying to go to the restroom, you keep stepping on your roommates on the way out".
The executives didn't get their individual rooms until they moved to Nishi Hongan-ji. I wonder if also that's the case in Hakuouki.
