Now that I think about it, the Star Trek: DS9 episode "Hard Time" might also work, with Chief O'Brian's hallucinations of Ee'char substituting for his Keeper, always there, always reminding him of what he'd done, what he'd become. It's the same reason that recovering alcoholics are told that if there is a place or an item that they associated with drinking (like a favorite chair), they should avoid it. Remembering pulls us back in, when the Lost likely want to forget their experiences. But how can you do that, knowing your Keeper might be just around the corner?
