Sometimes, it was difficult to focus on the pleasantries of the present when something glared at you out of memory constantly. It was hard to focus on the fact that it was warm and comfortable next to the fire with Ludwig and their cups of sweetened tea when his head kept wanting to remind him of the pains and struggles they'd put each other through. Over half a century had passed though, Ivan figured, hoping that it was something they could put behind them. The regimes that had been in power at the time had both fallen, Germany's well into the past and his own relatively recently as far as their concept of time was concerned.
He'd trusted Ludwig back then... wanted to believe that they would be close forever, willingly. No one else ever was around him willingly (at least that he saw) besides his younger sister. It wasn't fair, so when it was proposed that he... and Germany could be friends, allies... despite their opposing politically ideologies (opposing in theory), Ivan jumped at the very idea. Yet, it all was flung back in his face, all of the softly spoken words, all of the genuine smiles he'd given Ludwig at the time... He'd only wanted to be loved and wanted. Bullets and artillery in the early morning had turned the roses to rage.
Yet, when the hours began to seem their darkest, he'd returned the betrayal. Europe bathed itself in glorious red, drawing from the wounds he'd made run in his path to vindication. The beast of fascism was crushed under his boots as he made Germany pay for every snapped heart-string. That was... all in the past though, right? Ivan looked at Ludwig beside him, hoping that the past... would stay in the past.
