Summary: Paintings don't always come out right.
Painting wasn’t a skill he really possessed. Ivan found himself more than capable of drawing though, especially after the years of tutelage so long ago from Francis. The older country’s supervision had helped him at least hone his skills to be somewhat decent. Unfortunately, Ivan didn’t draw much these days and it took several hours of practice and staring a picture to even remotely get things right.
A special present was necessary, particularly as it was a part of an apology. Louise’s birthday had accidentally been forgotten in the tide of desk-work that he’d been given that weekend. With the picture of her in hand, he used it for reference.
Hours passed and by the time it was ready, dawn had almost arrived and he was left to wrap the thing up so it would be safe on the way to the hotel where she was staying. A quick cab ride brought him to the hotel, and another few minutes saw him up the elevator before he stopped in front of her room to knock on the door. He could hardly wait. Surely she’d love it so much!
Seconds ticked by slowly until the door was opened by a clearly… sleepy-looking Louise. “Good morning,” he said, all too cheery for the absurdly early hour.
“Rußland, it’s not even five in the morning.”
“I know.” Smiling, he held out the package, which she reluctantly took before opening it.
The look on her face was difficult for him to interpret. A confused expression seemed to finally settle in when she held up the picture included with the drawing. “Rußland, this is when I was trying to take the camera from you.” Yes, the original photograph was indeed unflattering.
Ivan hummed gleefully for a moment, trying to think of how to word his defense. “It was my favorite.”
