Howie and I traveled to the Big Island of Hawaii this weekend to see the volcano.
We started in Kona but ended up driving all the way around the island to Hilo to
go to Volcanoes National Park. We hiked for 2 hours at dusk over trecherous lava rock to see the red hot flow...but the exertion was worth it. Walking on the lava fields sounded like walking on broken glass and the rock left little splinters in my hands. An arduous hike led us to pools and rivers of molton hot lava and we watched the heat from the lava started fires and burned down trees in its path. The rocks in the path of the lava were moved or melted away with the eerie sound of cracking glass. After two hours of hypnotic lava watching, we started the long hike back to the car...in the dark with only our headlamps and the full moon to guide us.
