DAMN.
Did a little research; though Engel v. Vitale prohibits official- or clergy-led prayer during school events, student-led prayer at graduation ceremonies seems to be exempt for the moment. There have been an assload of cases, but none have made it to the Supreme Court yet.
Therefore, I can't bitch at graduation.
However, there are a few things I can do.
Number one, I can find out whether Shawn asked Buchheim if could speak, or if Buchheim asked Shawn if he would. (Note to self, do that tomorrow.)
Number two, I can encourage students next year to INSIST on having a student vote as to whether or not to include a prayer in their ceremony. It is their right to choose, and they should be given that right.
On a secondary note, I'm going to be a busy girl tomorrow. Mr. 21 Questions of the Middletown Journal called and asked if I could drop off a headshot at their office tomorrow. Shortly thereafter, Herr Buchheim called to ask if I was available between 2 and 4 tomorrow to be at Edgewood so the Hamilton Journal could get a picture. I feel popular. And I don't want to be.
