character info.
character name: Katniss Everdeen
canon & medium: The Hunger Games, book
age & species: 16, human
appearance: She's described as having olive skin, gray eyes and long, black hair. I will be using Willa Holland as her PB as there is very little art for her character apart from the UK book cover.
timeline: post-Catching Fire
background/history link: Here you go!

personality:Having grown up under the Capitol’s rule, Katniss is a strong young woman. Following her father’s death and her mother’s emotional deterioration, Katniss was forced to grow up and become her family’s caretaker, working twice as hard to ensure their survival. Although at times she appears to be resentful of her mother’s passive role in her life, Katniss perseveres and remains loyal to her family, particularly her sister Prim. In fact, she does countless things in her sister’s name, including blatantly breaking the rules of her district by going into the woods to hunt illegally and, most importantly, volunteering to take her place in the Hunger Games. It’s a pattern that can be seen in a few of her other relationships - with Gale, she continues to hunt for his family and steps between him and a Peacekeeper’s whip. Then there’s Peeta, who she’s determined to keep alive at whatever the cost, a significant step away from her initial resolve to protect herself. Regardless of her hesitance to use the word ‘love’ and the difficulty she has with expressing and understanding her feelings, the people she cares for are definite weaknesses and the easiest weapons to use against her.

Katniss is practical and doesn’t like to waste time with frivolities, such as her appearance. However, it’s here that she contradicts herself - she’ll play pretend if she has to, in order to get by. Survival is the key to her life, both in and out of the Games. She is marked by the decisions she’s made in the name of survival, which involve others’ deaths at her hands. On the surface, it appears that Katniss has been carried past the events of her first time in the arena by the turmoil of its aftermath, yet it can be said that she suffers from some form of survivor’s guilt. Prior to the 75th Hunger Games, while back in District 12, she is shown expressing feelings of remorse over the deaths she witnessed (especially Rue’s) and frustration over the fact that she made it out alive while so many others did not. The phrase “it’s not fair” sums it all up quite nicely.

Regardless, Katniss is not the sort to give up, even when the situation seems hopeless; she forges onward and has proven to be incredibly self-reliant. This is both a good and bad trait, as it has fostered her survival but has been a hitch in the development of alliances within the arena. She prefers to do things herself instead of putting herself at the mercy of people who might later turn against her, a sentiment almost entirely reserved for the Tributes. Moreover, she has a tendency to be rather impulsive, another double edged sword. It can be helpful in stressful situations as she is able to act quickly, but her tactless actions can do more harm than good. Where she wants to help, she might hinder.

Katniss is not very good at hiding her feelings, especially if they’re negative. Essentially, if you irritate her, you will know. This goes hand in hand with her claims of being unable to lie. She is upfront and entirely capable of being hostile, which tends to happen when she is highly uncomfortable in a situation and frustrated (ie, being forced to be someone she’s not for the Capitol and struggling to do so). However, Katniss knows better than to play her cards so openly in the treacherous world she lives in. She is capable of constructing a complete personality to put on display in order to hide her true face. This is born of the fact that she was under constant supervision - literally on camera most of the time - both during and after the Games. She knows certain things are expected of her (such as being madly in love with Peeta), and this has proven to be a constant area of conflict within her as she attempts to reconcile what she shows others with what she really feels and/or is thinking.

Nevertheless, Katniss is not all serious business. She can be friendly as long as you aren’t too superficial or mean, and she does have the capacity to joke and tease, although this functions best in a low stress situation. She is also ridiculously squeamish when it comes to injured people. She can shoot an arrow into a guy’s neck, but she can’t handle treating wounds. Moreover, even if District 12 is seen entirely backwards by many, Katniss is actually really clever, although her stubborn way of holding on to preconceptions does cloud her judgment often.

In a way, Katniss is naïve. Although she has been subjected to many horrible experiences, she continues to hold a very narrow view of the world and lacks the foresight to take into account the possible consequences of her actions. This is most obvious during her meeting with President Snow, in which she openly expresses surprise at hearing that her stint during the Games incited rebellion throughout Panem. This is a trait taken advantage of all throughout the 75th Games by Haymitch and the others. It’s an unfortunate situation because her naivety, combined with the effects of the society she lives in, has made it so she finds it hard to trust, but once she does it can be wholeheartedly. Katniss knows desperation, starvation, physical pain, but she was absolutely devastated by the revelation that she had been used by those she trusted.

Despite her undesirable lifestyle, Katniss is resistant toward the social and political changes that have come hand in hand with her victory in the 74th Games. Although it was difficult living day to day, she was, above all, secure in her home and sure of her position in her district. Now, she is neither. Thus, the end of the 75th Games finds her embittered and charged with the responsibility of inspiring countless people to fight what seems like an impossible fight. Most of all, Katniss is tired.
abilities:Her participation in the Hunger Games has given her considerable experience in Survival 101. She's a skilled hunter, her choice weapons being the bow and arrow followed by a good set of knives. She has an assortment of skills for the outdoors at her disposal, such as knot-tying, camouflage, and sleeping in trees. She can fight, but she'd really rather not.
any plans for your character here?Even though Katniss was in a painkiller-induced haze last time we saw her, she arrives in Willaknapp bundled up in emotional turmoil and acutely aware of where she was headed in her world. So, as upset with her role as she is, she knows she has to get home and will be moving forward to get there. Aside from that, this setting will provide Katniss an opportunity to interact outside of the constant pressure she was under in her world. There’s no Capitol breathing down her neck, no explicit responsibility to be a leader, etc; she is free to live a little, although she remains burdened by what awaits her at home.
possessions:
▬ her clothes (she's last mentioned to be in a thin nightgown, but I imagine she changed into something more practical later)
▬ a gold mockingjay pin
