Wes doesn't really say no, but I love the icon anyway

OMG! Where to start on this one? I mean, really, so much that I loved about it and so much that made me go "AAARGH!!!" from an obsessive compulsive fan perspective. Overall first impression is that it's a nice companion piece to last week's episode and yay! Wes backstory! Also, it seems a bit more inline with the earlier tone of the series -- which I'm not sure I like in the context of being given more of Wes' history. But now for specifics.

Let's start with the beginning. Already I love the episode because Wes and Travis are running! Yay for the running! That said, I'm making slightly skeptical faces at Wes and his whole "we didn't agree on terms" thing. I know it makes him sound more lawyerly but what it really makes him sound like is a first year law student who finds all this fun legal stuff awesome to work into everyday conversation. Conversely, Wes waiting for the perp to confess while dangling from a building...well, I'm not a criminal lawyer but I strongly suspect that his confession is not valid. Which Wes would know. Honestly his slightly schizophrenic approach to the legal side of the criminal justice system (innocent until proven guilty! but evidence can be obtained in less-than-legal methods!) gives me the bad feels. One or the other Wes! Either back up your theory with action or stop getting on Travis's case for being all "guilty until proven innocent" stuff.

Moving on. I love the couples therapy scenes. Love, love, love them. I love Wes & Travis's group, I love seeing their personalities come to play. I love how defensive all the guys in the room got over the whole "failure to perform" thing. I love the expressions on Wes and Travis's faces as they go through the whole "performance anxiety" line. And the way Wes moves his chair farther from Travis after the first bad bust! Love!

I hated that Dr. Ryan's go-to sports analogy was cricket. I mean, yes, she's British. Yes, her accent makes her sound slightly posh (but I'm terrible with accents so can't say for certain if this is just American-things-all-British-accents-sound-posh-ness or what). That said, she's been in America for, oh, awhile now. Surely she'd realize that nobody in America understands the game of cricket. Surely!

Anyway. Wes and being hit on by girls. It's nice to see women recognize him as a sexy, sexy man (especially next to Travis who's the Big Sexy of the show) but I find it weird that Travis is only commenting on this aspect now. I mean Kendell was hitting on him in the episode when she was first introduced, Jonelle has lovely flirt with him -- surely by now Travis would have commented on the fact that women find Wes attractive. I mean, yes, he's been telling Wes to go find himself a woman all series, but he hasn't really been all "Dude. That girl thinks you're hot. Go hit that." Unless he has and I'm forgetting.

The case was interesting but problematic for me. The husband was really a schmuck and the wife was clearly the mastermind of the plan. Yes nobody got injured but really guys? You're going to let her go? Come on! Don't reward bad behavior! *sigh*

And now for the part that gave me squangst (simultaneous squee and angst): Wes's backstory. That whole scene with him in the hotel on his really bad date. So much love for the stuff we get there: the case that caused him to change careers (although Common Law! You cocktease! GIVE ME MORE THAN JUST A NAME!!!), his fussy OCD-ness with the spoon and so forth that shows up when he's uncomfortable, Wes's side of the Alex-Wes-implosion story! And yet? IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. Unless Wes's character is actually older than the actor, he really, really, really couldn't have been an awesome lawyer before becoming a cop. He's been on the force for 7 years (unless for some reason he and Travis knew each other before Wes became a cop, but I find that doubtful). Unless he completed his education/training in under 7 years (4 years undergrad, 3 years law school) he's had, at most 3 years as a lawyer. Which, no. Not enough time to really show your chops as a lawyer. *weeps the tears of the obsessive fan trying to shoehorn TV logic into reality*

Other things that bugged me about this episode: Nobody giving Wes props for making a huge step in getting over Alex. The whole betting thing between Wes and Travis -- seriously, Wes, don't you know now that you should never bet against Travis? In all of the episodes where the guys have a bet, Wes always loses. Which annoys me. The fact that it seems like up until the show started Wes seemed to exist in a vacuum over his relationship with Alex -- which, ok, I can buy that therapy is helping him get over Alex but I don't know. It really does seem like he's made no progress for the past year with respect to his divorce.

Other things I loved about this episode: Travis's line "For the record, I fully expect you to go postal like this one day." The fact that the captain ships Wes/Travis and tells the whole force about his 'ship. The way both Travis and Wes are all "Which one of us is Elizabeth Taylor?" The way Wes gets jealous over Travis doing case talk with another detective. That Wes is such a standup guy who won't take advantage of a girl having cold-feet about her fiance. The (to me) realistic way Wes is getting over Alex.

Overall, really enjoyed this episode. But the more Wes's backstory gets revealed the more I'm getting all fannishly twisted up inside. I love this show so much but the part of me that's been in law school and studying for the bar and all that is intersecting with the obsessive fan part (which, really, up until Mag7 TOTALLY DID NOT EXIST) and, yeah. Things aren't computing and it makes me grumpy.
