wobaozhewo. The prompt was "quintessential vindication of sacrifice".
So this is minuscule, but... I finished? Haha, there is more of this verse floating around somewhere.
The projection disappears without a sound, and you’re silent but smiling as you tuck the capsule back into your collar, letting it fall under your shirt. I know where it rests -- just above the sternum -- not only because I’ve seen where it lies against the paleness of your chest, but because mine falls in the exact same spot.
You don’t ask me what I think. You just grin, acting clever, or brave, or carefree. Maybe just witless, ‘cause you’re good at making people believe that. But me, I’m tired of looking for you in your games where you masquerade as a better you, and what I’m seeing now is a kid with more heart than he admits to, more brains than he knows how to use, and the kind of blind, fear-driven courage that will be the death of the pair of us.
So I sling my arm around your neck to tug you down, close enough to hear the huff of your breath, close enough to kiss, and I do. I do. A hard, tight kiss against your beautiful, grinning mouth, ‘cause you’re just a kid, and you’re keen, and you’ve yet to realise what your sacrifice means to me, and I know that until the night finally comes, there’s no way you’ll know that I love you without me saying those goddamn words and taking you down with me, except like this. Just loving you, you beautiful, bright boy, and even if I go to hell tomorrow night, I’ll think back on this the very moment before I go: how free it feels to kiss you in the sunlight, the scrape of stubble and the solid press of your shoulder into my chest, the smell of sun-warmed leather and the roughness of unwashed wool, and the rest of the world casting a blind eye to everything that was ever wrong about us, because we were, at one point, invincible.
