Something short and quick. For the No Other perfs and Heechul's birthday, kind of.
“Don’t smile at me. Don’t smile at all.”
Eunhyuk laughs, a small round sound, and his fingers come up to touch the knot of his tie. Heechul’s cheeks feel exhausted with being pulled into a smile.
Eunhyuk asks, “Why?” He’s still smiling. Heechul could count his teeth if he wanted to. All those pearly whites resting in their little pink gum beds. Instead he glances into the mirror.
He says, “It’s my birthday,” and he adjusts the ribbon in his hair. Eunhyuk laughs again, and he can see Eunhyuk’s reflection looking at him with smiling eyes. His own grin is strange and unstoppable, and he struggles to rein it in. To limit it to their selves in the mirror. It’s a losing battle.
Eunhyuk doesn’t smile at him, or at all, for the entirety of the performance. Jungsu wishes him happy birthday as publicly as possible, and he’s in such a good mood, he even raises his arms in the shape of a heart on stage. It all sets his own smile free, and he’s on top of the world when it’s over and a small crowd is milling around backstage. He finds Eunhyuk in the thick of it all.
“You did well,” he says, resting his palms on Eunhyuk’s shoulders. “I didn’t expect you to.”
Eunhyuk turns and crinkles his eyes at him. “Of course I did. It’s your birthday, hyung. Happy birthday.”
He knows what this giddy contentment means, but he places it carefully aside with a small grin, nodding his head in an of course, thank you. The silly smile breaks out as soon as Eunhyuk turns away, but for once he chooses not to stifle it. He’s allowed to smile if he wants to. It’s his birthday, after all.
