DUDE! Scott Barrios, uda man. I love your letters to the Roanoke Times, they should give you a weekly column! I like the cut of your jib, my man. I bet that like me you're an aphid indoorsman and tubesocker. We should get together sometime, unsheath and engage in a little friendly swordplay. U in? Do you still work out at the airport? Wanna meet me at the Waffle House? Keep putting Kagan and Obama in their place for trying to keep oil prices low while eschewing Valley Metro and tanking up your car, I'm totally with you on that. Now we just gotta get rid of all the enviroMENTALists and NeoCroms.

.. there's always a strong Autobiographical component to Stanley's work, from mailing out naked photos of himself in the American 1990's to riding the Tesla tip to fame as a naive girl researcher working in the Balkans. rather than repeat himself, Stanley turned his back on "easy fame" to practice what some media analysts have characterized as "Grudge Rock": Billy Jack-style guerrilla theatre. one memorable episode involved goading a bouncer at an NYC nightspot into dragging him down some steps and bruising his arm. a more traditional foray into th' autobiographical was The Golden Horseshoe: A New Hope, wherein the audience - purely by force of narrative - is dragged screaming past the Updike Funeral Home and through the streets of Huddleston, VA. ever the trickster, he has also presented texts under the name "Bob Mangold" (think Richard Bachman or, better yet, a Nu.Yawk/Philly/BlooRidge Borges). not sure what to make of the above letter, though. i mean, the whole pro-war homoeroticism thing has been done already, right? (Jamie Kirchick, 300, etc). there are prolly deeper levels, though / stuff that, like, a more discriminating critic might pick up on.
