Yep, that was what I meant. (-: That year Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption were both nominees for Best Picture. Also, Tom Hanks beat out folks like Morgan Freeman (Shawshank) and Nigel Hawthorne (Madness of King George) for Best Leading Actor. There was a similar travesty in Best Director.
I was scandalized when Naomi Watts wasn't nominated last year for The Painted Vail. She was so good in that.
Also, Jennifer Connelly shouldn't have won for A Beautiful Mind. I really think Marissa Tomei should have won Best Supporting Actress that year for In the Bedroom.
Well, it was more about race relations than having a gay husband in the 50s (I thought the homosexual element would be more prominent though). I remember watching it on DVD I think -- I liked the director's commentary portion.
So, my only real dissapointment was that the homosexuality element wasn't that significant :)
Oddly enough I hated Magnolia the first time I saw it (in the theatre), but loved it after re-watching a few times.
