I got my hands on We Are Scientists' first major label CD, so it is time for a review. I must warn you, I know much less about music than most of my friends, and definitely lack the critical eye of some (mofo, voxter...). But here we go.
I must say, I was impressed, on some levels. I found it easy to listen to the CD several times in the past couple days. This is primarily due to the style of WAS, in which they come up with catchy repetitive melodies that rock and you can sing along to for a while, but will eventually grow stale. In that way they have not changed - and they have probably gotten better at it. The songs were clearly written to be performed, not played on the stereo. The catchiness is perfect for singing along in the club while fast becoming deaf from the speakers, and the subject matter is all about alcohol. Seriously. Almost every single one can be summed up as "I've been drinking too much, this club rocks, so why won't you sleep with me?" But they are fun.
So musically, WAS sounds like a good club band, which is what they are going for. It is just unfortunate that they abandoned the universally appealing subject matter of scientists fighting monsters and decided to focus on a niche market of 20-somethings drinking the night away. Maybe they'll go back after their second album fails, but for now it sounds like they're on top of the world.
