2. If it starts with revenge... how will it end?
“Was it revenge?” Sandra asked as she tended to Todd’s blackening skin. The fight with the other soldier before leaving the dump had left some nasty marks but he didn’t seem to have anything broken.
Todd watched her as she worked. He didn’t even know exactly what revenge was. Why had he saved the colonists? Todd thought it over before he answered.
“No.”
“No?” She repeated. “Why?”
Todd went silent again gritting his teeth against the pain as she wrapped his ribs. The pain subsided as soon as she finished tying it. Todd had no more of an answer that he did when she asked. There wasn’t a reason or there was but Todd didn’t have the words for it.
His blue eyes roved around the makeshift medical area on the ship. Eventually they settled back on Sandra as she backed away. She still had that questioning look. It wasn’t something he could brush off so easily. Others started at him, looking for an answer but none forced him to speak like her gaze did.
Todd inspected the cloth wrap around his midsection before looking up at Sandra.
“I did it for you.” There was a long pause. “.. and Nathan.”
Without another word Todd stood. The way her eyes watered up was uncomfortable for him. He didn’t know what they meant. Before she could say anything or touch him again for too much emotion Todd returned to his duties.
