Today I took the train further uptown than usual in order to drop off something for my boss. Heading back, I decided to take a bus because it was a short distance, and it's always nice not to go underground! The NYC buses are so nice I am always amazed... The BART in SF is to the NYC subway system what the NYC bus system is to SF buses... They are clean, warm, and cushioned... Today's ride immediately prompted musings on last night's film, "Stranger than Fiction." I just loved it... I keep hearing Emma Thompsons line in my head, and as I was riding the bus, I remembered Harold thoughtfully reading the masterpiece that spelled out his death.
After this reflection, I turned my attention to the people around me, again amazed by the NYC transit. So many people from different walks of life use it... and I was especially caught by the vision of this elderly man, just grinning away as he got up from his seat - even as the bus is moving - with his satchel briefcase in hand, moving over to wait by the door in order to get off at the next stop. I look out my window and see a somewhat older lady (late-50s/early-60s?) crossing Fifth Ave in the middle of the block. Warms my heart to see people on the move, going somewhere. I just imagine people of their age, in other cities or other states of health....rotting on the couch or hospital bed. But in other cities I am another creature as well... I see old people on a bus and it makes me sad. Oh, then I find myself constantly questioning the arrogance of my feelings about other people!!
