"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." The collection of Thoreau's writings has revitalized my commute. Oddly enough, reading about how worthless "merely" making a living is, brightens up my mood on my way into work. Could also be that I owe taxes this year too.... I'm in a Hate$$ kinda mood:) It is so inspiring to read lines of such passion simply establishing the right to another BETTER way of life! I'll share some of the lines that have affected me this week....
"I am awakened every night by the panting of the locomotive....I think there is nothing, not even crime, more opposed to poetry, to philosophy, to life itself, than this incessant business."
"Is there any such thing as widom not applied to life? Is she merely the miller who grinds the finest logic?"
"If I could command the wealth of all the worlds by lifting my finger, Iwould not pay SUCH a price for it.... It makes God to be an annoyed gentleman who scatters a handful of pennies in order to see mankind scramble for them."
And my favorite, somehow, capturing my heart and imagination: "I love my fate to the core and rind."
Add a little gentle music in my ears, and I'm in another world!!
As a side note, I am very much looking forward to todayscommute home. Why? I just printed out a bunch of great and varied articles to read on the way home.... something serious and inspiring on the way in is great, but when the day is done, my back and head hurts, and I want to laugh, laugh laugh...all the way home:)
