My summer in Philadelphia is going really well. Today I went to Rohobeth beach with Sarah and Rob! ... sat in the sand and swam in the sea ... reading Cradle to Cradle and Introduction to Museum Studies ... ate some oysters,
I like it in Philadelphia. I went to the Art museum on friday night with this girl who's also interning at the franklin. The art museum in Philly has the steps that Rocky ran up in the training montage. They stay open late on friday nights and have swanky panio music in the grand staircase-- people dress up and drink martinis and wine. We strolled through an exhibit about this Japanese married couple of really amazing painter/poets. Cool stuff! And went chronologically though European art history, 1100-1850. We got lost in contemporary on the way out.
I ride my bike to the museum most days. Sometimes I drive and hear the astronomer who sits in the same office as me talk about astronomical thinks on NPR. My office has astronomers, biochemists, graphic designers, museum developers, industrial designers and exhibit designers all in the same area. There's a giant green truss going through the center of the room, like the bottom of a bridge. It supports a train that is in the exhibit above, which was donated to The Franklin Institute in the 30s by the manufacturer.
The design team has been really nice to me-- they are letting me help design an exhibit called "The Amazing Machine" and are encouraging me to play an equal role in its development. I've been doing a lot of sketches, watercolor drawings, and computer drawings for the final bid package which is due at the end of the month. The other designers are Brad and Dottie. Brad had us over for dinner and we all went to see this really cool play in the Alter(ed) Garage.. an old garage turned into a theatre on Alter Street. It was rube goldbergish.. an absurdist play filled with strange contramptions and inventions
http://www.machinesmachinesmachines.com/ The Franklin Insitute houses the national monument to Ben Franklin, a giant white statue of him under a dome modeled after the Pantheon. King Tut is the big exhibit on display right now. There's a giant heart that you can walk through, which has been on display (but revamped) since the 50s. Tons of other neat stuff. A giant observatory on the roof. I love it there. Everybody is pumped about encouraging the legacy of Ben Franklin.. to get kids excited about science and discovery. And the kids there are excited! It's so neat to walk around and see them use the interactives and experience the exhibits. I think I've discovered something that I really want to be part of.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. i hope everyone's summer is going well!
