After an epic 24-hour return adventure with bigkgbguy, I am "home" from Burning Man, alive and still more or less in one piece. I'm simultaneously overjoyed to be out of the choking dust and blazing sun, and crushed at the fact that I'm sitting at work wearing a button down shirt and pants instead of my usual muumuu/visor combo. When I got out of bed to ( Read more... )

Can you pick me up? I have an unopened bottle of Maker's and a fuckload of Tasty Bites. I just need to put on some clean underwear and bring another pair for the trip back.

I still have a bunch of Tecate, corn cakes, and canned fruit. Let me pick up a new shade structure and I'll meet you in Reno.

There are two 16x16 shade structures on sale at Target for $70. I just saw them today. We are all set.

fuck carports. they are so tiring to erect and strike, and they take up lots of space in transport. did you guy wire your shade or only rebar? there has to be a better way to shelter your tent.

Both. The issue was those flimsy poles, most of which bent in half in Thursday's dust storm. The alternative would have been to do what Irina did and run back to camp and tear it down every time the wind started up. Screw that. I'll take the carport.

Isabel had this:

We staked it down using the stakes that came with it and she wired it down in a few places too. It had no problems during the windstorm.

Don't get a carport unless you have someone else to put it up with you...it takes a few hours and is very frustrating/tiring. We put up two of them. There are a hundred parts and they still can fly away in the wind.
