Wiidiculousness

Notes from my continuing quest to find a Wii:

1) Last week, my co-worker found out that they were getting a shipment at the Circuit City near Serramonte. Yay! So, I woke up bright and early Sunday morning and got my butt down to the fog-enveloped, icy cold peninsula by 8:30. I was number 22 in line. My co-worker was number 14. After a bone-chilling half hour, they handed out vouchers for the 14 available Wiis. I went home and took a hot shower. Boo.

2) Later that night, my online tracker informed me that the Toys 'R' Us site had consoles on sale. I quickly sped through their checkout process and got my email confirmation that I had indeed purchased a Wii. Yay! As the days went on, however, and the status of my order continued to be 'processing', I grew concerned. Today I called their friendly customer service line, and what do you know? Turns out they 'sold' more Wiis than they actually possessed. They couldn't even guarantee me one the next time they received a shipment. Boo.

3) Today as I was sitting down to lunch, that same co-worker called to tell me that they had Wiis available at the GameStop on Mission! Yay! Yelling over my shoulder to my lunchmates that I'd see them back at the office, I literally dropped my sandwich and powerwalked the 7 or 8 blocks in the heat of high noon (it's frickin' hot today!) to Mission Street. I waited in line for what seemed like hours behind a cloud of 8 or so kids all orbiting around the same dithering, confused parent (who held the credit card, naturally) until it was finally my turn.

"I hear you have the Wii," I said to the young clerk.

His face lit up. "Yes, we do!"

"Can I have one?"

"Yes, sir," he exclaimed, and ran to the back.

That's right. Lo, though I have suffered many trials and tribulations, endured freezing cold, survived sweltering heat, and sat through hideous muzak, I am now, at long last, the proud owner of a new Wii.

Tennis, anyone?
