First of all - I never said they weren't useful/can be used everyday for useful things etc. In fact on the desk in front of me right now is a Swiss Army Knife used as a letter opener.

Secondly, yes, if somewhere isn't safe at night then yeah maybe you shouldn't walk there, but I wouldn't see it as my fault if I got injured, I don't deserve to be stabbed or slashed just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and to think so would be incredibly stupid. I didn't however say neighbourhood, I said CITY. As in, population 1,750 000. Glasgow is the only home I've ever known, and it is an amazing city that's falling to the wayside due to gang culture and knife/gun crime, why the hell should I be the one to move?

What I meant by the kitchen knife comment is that someone with the wrong intentions can easily go into the kitchen and get a knife, of course I didn't mean a steak knife should be used for opening a box.

Your view on why you should carry a knife "if some guy comes up to try to rape me" - that sort of mentality is why the problems here are so bad - people think they need them to protect themselves, they think the other side is gonna be carrying too, and half the time, it's the other side that gets hurt. Carry a pepper spray?

I'm not saying they should be banned altogether - but if people are getting hurt, maybe an amnesty isn't altogether a bad thing. Some of my friends, family and collegues could have been saved if my government had the same thoughts as yours.

Well if you're so concerned about your city why don't you either join a volunteer group to try and help it, or talk to a...err I donno if you have them there, but like a mayor or someone big and try to set up something. I'm not being sarcastic either. You seem to love your city, and you seem hurt by it going to the wayside. If you really like it, try to help it. Even if it's just making the buildings prettier, maybe setting up a teenage hangout to help keep kids off the street, I donno. Some things like that really help. Granted there will still be crime, but there are always ways you can help. I'd love to do something like this someday, I think it would be amazing. Maybe something to think about? But I just don't know how things work over there.

That makes sense about the kitchen knife thing now. That's what I'm talking about though, why take away pocket knives when we will still have fixed blades, which can be huge and do more damage, and have kitchen knives?

Seriously, if a guy is coming after me trying to rape me, he deserves to get stabbed and hurt. I wouldn't go randomly attack a guy if he was just sitting there and I just "thought" he had a knife. In fact I don't know of anyone who would just attack the "other side" because they think they have a knife. I have pepper spray, but I'd feel better knowing I have more than a spray. What if it turns out I have a defective spray? What if I can't get to it quick enough? (I know for a fact I can get my knife out and ready faster than I can get my pepper spray from my purse) What if, somehow, the pepper spray doesn't work? I've seen people where it doesn't affect them unless you keep spraying them constantly. If it's some huge guy that it doesn't affect, one little spray before he grabs my hands won't do shit to him.

Well maybe your area could benefit from a knife ban, but not here. We really don't have many knife crimes, it's mostly guns. Most people over here use them for useful things, not in gangs or crime. It is sad that people you know have gotten hurt by knives and I'm sorry you and them had to go through that. But I can honestly say I wouldn't be for banning knives anywhere even if my dad, and I love him to death, got killed by a knife. Don't blame the tool, blame the psycho wielding it. Plus, even if knives were banned, that psycho would still have them and still have killed my dad, just now the good guys don't have them.
