I finally, finally got around to reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy last night (HEY, I'M SLOW. I actually checked it out from the library at the beginning of this year, but then i had school and never got around to it.) It only took me, like, four hours to get through! And it RULED. Oh man, i laughed out loud, and i very rarely do that when i read. So anyway, we saw the movie today.
It was so cracked out, but, you know, in a good way! Like the book! I loved loved LOVED the guide- the entries (so colorful and funny!) and the narration were absolutely perfect. Zaphod Beeblebrox is my hero, and Sam Rockwell is ridiculously fucking awesome. All the winking and smiling and generally being a moronic, charming, spastic hippie jackass- LOVE. And Martin Freeman! Oh man, i have the sudden craving to watch more of The Office. I was getting caught up, but then i... stopped having time. YOU KNOW.
The Improbability Drive was great (the yarn! AWESOME), and man, the whale was one of my favorite parts of the book. The intro! With the dolphins! The song was damn catchy- we went to Best Buy afterwards and my dad actually bought the soundtrack because he's a dork, and we were listening to it on the way home. Oh, man, the planet factory on Magrathea was SO COOL. The shots going through there were amazing. The dramatic pull-out from Earth before it's blown up was hilarious, with the music and constantly thinking it's going to stop when it doesn't. (kind of like the beginning of Spaceballs! HAH! :D) Oh! Oh! The lightsaber knife that toasted the bread! Heeeeeeeeeeeeee. I thought the scene when Trillian kept shooting Zaphod with the point of view gun was sad, and i kind of wish they had kept the reveal that he was the one who blocked off part of his own brain(s) the way it was in the book, because it seemed like the one time he was really sadly kind of sincere.
They certainly changed a lot from the book, which i'm sure pissed off a lot of nerds. WHATEVER. It's an interpretation, it wasn't what i imagined and it wasn't perfect, but it was funny and looked neat and i liked it. Same way i feel about A Series of Unfortunate Events, same way i feel about Harry Potter. Changes can disappoint you, but it's not worth getting outraged about. Books ≠ Movies.
That being said, the main thing i didn't like was how much the Vogons were in it, pretty much because they're boring. That's my complaint.
Oh WAIT, i lied just now. I have another complaint. THEY DIDN'T FUCKING SHOW THE SERENITY TRAILER. I had heard that a lot of people didn't get to see it, so i was really praying hard, but my hopes were dashed. Every single trailer was for a shitty kids movie. WTF? Highly aggravating. I was so looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. JERKS.
Speaking of Serenity, i want a crossover with Firefly and HHGTTG. You know Simon's encyclopedia, with the digital screen and all that? That is SO the Encyclopedia Galactica. And HELLO, "Heart of Gold"! Simon and River basically are hitchhikers. "The Earth got used up" - no, it got blown up! MAN. The part in the movie right after the destruction of Earth, when it pans up to empty space and the twangy music starts (beginning of
track 7), it reminded me so much of Firefly. Sigh.
By the way, to those who have seen Serenity already? EAT SHIT AND DIE, ASSHOLES. I mean... uhh... something a little less hostile. No, wait, i'm kidding, i think i might have meant that.

WOOOOOOOO, GREGG'S GONE! Seriously, when he decided to take Jenn and Katie with him for the reward? Dumbest move ever, jackass. Jenn's reaction at tribal council was priceless. (and the jury's! STEPH!) Gooooooooo Tom and Ian! Since they're not up against Stephenie anymore, i am completely rooting for them all the way. Ian, you are so cute and freakishly, freakishly tall!
It needs to, like, register with me that school is over for the summer and i have free time. RELAX, man!
