I have to say I felt a little let down by this episode, mostly because of what you said...its SO CLOSE to the end and we spent a whole episode on back story of non-main characters! Like ok yes, it was important(? I'm still confused) but still. IDK. I liked that they were ancient Romans/Greeks/whatever just because...I'm a super huge fan of those times. Like I own the made for TV Cleopatra starring Leonor Varela (original Marta on Arrested Development, lol) Timothy Dalton & Billy Zane (I'm cool).
Anyway, I digress.
why did the magical CG light have to look so bad? YES THANK YOU. When they first showed it I kind of rolled my eyes and said "Are you shitting me? Why does it look so lame?" I guess I'm just disappointed that it really is something as obvious as protecting all that is light and good in the world. Or whatever. Anyway, way to make Smokey, Jacob. Not that I really understand what is going on there and if it really is MIB or what or ahhhhh head exploded. I feel like for every question they answer they raise another one. But didn't Allison Janney say that in the beginning? So maybe that was a subtle hint that we're not going to learn everything by the end anyway.
So much of what you're saying makes sense. Jacob just wanting friends (lol), pregnant women dying (!!) and the proving Jacob right thing. I do now wonder wtf is going to happen because what...they're going to have to kill Smokey I guess? We still don't really know why he's not allowed to leave...maybe Smokey is the opposite of the ~light~? Which I think was hypothesized weeks ago anyway?
I'M TRYING REALLY HARD TO AVOID SAYING THAT THE THESIS OF THIS SHOW IS "LOVE CONQUERS ALL" uggggggggh gross Essentially I'm thinking that the moral of Lost is going to be the moral of Harry Potter in which case, NEEDS MORE RON WEASLEY.
Also I HATEDDDD how Alias was on Sunday nights!! AND REMEMBER HOW PHASE ONE WAS ON AFTER THE SUPERBOWL? AT LIKE 1AM? I had to sneak an antenna-tv into my room and watch it on a barely audible volume and try to see things through the static because it was a school night and my parents would have shot me, lol. And I had a test the next day! I understand that I would have had to do this pretty much any other day, anyway, but on weekdays they don't have show-delaying sporting events. So, moral of my story is THANKS JJ ABRAMS SHOWS. THANKS.
Oh, also, does this mean Jacob built his enormous statue man? Although it appeared to date back to Ancient Egypt more than Ancient Rome/Greece because the Egyptians were big on the animal gods and the Latin-speaking population was more into human-shaped ones. I feel like that isn't even a ~mystery~ anymore, or at least one we shouldn't be caring about? Although it makes sense because one would assume he had a shit ton of time on his hands.
I'm also starting to think more that MIB is dead and Smokey is just taking his form. Because the wine or whatever is what makes Jacob/Richard not age, yes? And MIB never drank it (did he?) but he never ages. So I'm assuming that's because he's dead?
HAHA i almost included my thoughts in this post that Jacob built the statue himself over hundreds of years just because he was bored and wanted a badass house on the beach. I suppose it's probably most likely that it was built by whoever built the temple, so, Jacob's followers i guess. It's not something they need to waste time spelling out, though. (although we haven't exactly gotten a real conclusion to temple shenanigans, or why Dogen was introduced this season.)
Because the wine or whatever is what makes Jacob/Richard not age, yes? And MIB never drank it (did he?) but he never ages.
Hmm, i didn't think of it being just the wine. I thought the wine just sealed the deal for the magical powers being invoked. So the protector of the island a) lives forever (until they tap a replacement) and b) has magical powers to make other shit happen, like making other people live forever. And obviously the smoke monster would be immortal cause he's a smoke monster.
When they first showed it I kind of rolled my eyes and said "Are you shitting me? Why does it look so lame?"
ALL OF LOST'S SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE DISAPPOINTINGLY LAME. Well, maybe not all of them. But almost all of them. Blerg.
We still don't really know why he's not allowed to leave...maybe Smokey is the opposite of the ~light~?
Actually i think they explained it pretty well in Ab Aeterno. The smoke monster is evil and if that gets out into the world then everybody is fucked (even though... evil already exists in the world? idk.) I've seen a lot of people saying this is basically a Pandora's Box kind of thing, and the description of Pandora here sounds exactly like Jacob and MIB's mother. !!!
AND REMEMBER HOW PHASE ONE WAS ON AFTER THE SUPERBOWL? AT LIKE 1AM?
OH YES I DO. My home team won the Super Bowl and then Alias broke my brain. That was my first year of college! I had a couple friends over to watch it with me (lol when it was on at 1AM) and we were all freaking the hell out, it was good times. And then i had to go to classes the next day in an absolute fog. ANYWAY i have actually kind of vaguely (RIDICULOUSLY) considered taking the post-Lost Monday off of work. Because i will probably be up all night mourning and attempting to write a reaction post and basically feeling traumatized. yeeeeeeeeeesh.

lol true story, I sometimes forget what was actually explained in episodes and what people hypothesized afterward. Basically Lost breaks my brain and I probably should have paid more attention in my college philosophy class.

Luckily (lol not really) I got laid off a week ago and my last day will be pre-Lost finale. I'm actually ok with it, mostly because I've had a lot of freelance work recently. Plus they terminated me without a reason so I probably have a pretty good court case if need be, haha. No but really, I'm pretty pumped that this means I can fully absorb Lost (no one I worked with even watches it! WHAT IS THAT?)
Anyway, I digress.
