I never got into the fandom either! I made some icons and some fanart, but that's about it. Then again that's basically how i interact with EVERY fandom: mess around with pretty pictures and keep to myself. And i totally get you on not watching the extended editions, this was actually the first time i'd seen them. :O Even though i have owned them, uh, since they were released. It's just that it's such a daunting time investment it's really hard to set aside a good chunk of time to hunker down and watch it. (even though each movie is the equivalent of only a handful of episodes of an hour-long drama! it just SEEMS bigger though. more involved.)

there is at least one moment in each one that makes me slightly weepy.

Ditto! It's all very overwhelming, not only with a war being fought by an entire world and good vs. evil but also just on a basic emotional level.

PIPPIN'S SONG. That is one of the most gorgeous and sad sequences of anything, oh man. It's like you'd think the singing would be totally lame and awkward, but it is not! And that's another thing the extended versions have is more songs. Since like half of the books is made up of singing. XD

LORD OF THE RIIIIIIINGS. Remember when RotK won Best Picture??!?! It still fucking amazes me that that happened, that the stuffy boring Academy actually gave top honors to epic nerdy fantasy. As much as i kind of don't put that much stock into awards shows, it's a really special uncontrollable kind of glee when something you love WINS. It still kinda makes me teary that it got that kind of recognition. :*(

I don't own any versions of any of the films! How this still is a fact, I'm not sure, but it needs to be amended post haste. (And then I will watch them, and it will be awesome, obv.) You're right that it's a tad overwhelming, just because there's so much emotional stuff going on, so much death, so much struggle, etc. Plus, that MUSIC, dude. It does things to your soul!

It's such a short song! But it gives me chills, every time. The way it's edited, cut with all those soldiers riding off to die is just... tragic and perfect.

I remember that! That was amazing. Like you say, recognition for the fantasy nerds! It's funny, because I'm not really into sci-fi or fantasy (yes, there are a few exceptions to both, but on the whole: no), but even I felt all happy about that. It was too awesome not to.
