PROLOGUE: I basically feel like an incredible moron when it comes to catching on to this show, because my parents have watched it since the first episode and i had every opportunity to see it from the beginning (my dad is in advertising and that's why he was interested in it. he's a dork. my reaction: SNOOOOOOZE.) but instead i was like "naaaaaah. *makes icons pointlessly*" THUMBS UP, IDIOT.

So holy crap is it pretty. The CLOTHES and the HAIR and oh my. Also watching it makes me feel a) like i have acquired a significant bout of emphysema and b) drunk. By osmosis. Visual osmosis.

I had a pretty hard time getting used to just... watching the show, in the beginning i felt like "..........I DON'T LIKE THIS PLACE TAKE ME BACK TO THE FUTURE PLEASE." Peggy's OB/GYN visit made me want to curl up in a ball and die, ha ha ha! It also took me a lot longer to even VAGUELY warm up to the men without constantly thinking they're total douchebags. But it's very fascinating to see such an unsympathetic view of a bygone era, and of course watching the ladies you can only think "BRACE YOURSELVES. I KNOW HOW THIS TURNS OUT." So. There's that.

PEGGY AND BETTY AND JOAN, YES PLZ. Ooooh man, the Roger/Joan revelation blew my mind a little bit! It's a testament to the show that i HATEHATEHATE adultery drama (SO OBNOXIOUS) but i am relatively okay with... a fair amount of it on this show. But they are crazy adulterous. Damn, Don Draper. It's hard out here for a pimp.

Can i just say. Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks = GENETICALLY ENGINEERED TO LOOK PERFECT FOR THE EARLY '60S, Y/Y??? SWOON. Also John Slattery is so foxy for an old dude. I have always thought so. It used to make me sad on Ed (ED!) that he came in to steal Carol away because i wanted to like him very much but was mostly unable to feel favor toward such a bastard. :( But i like Roger alright! He and Don crack me up.

WHY IS EVERYONE SO ATTRACTIVE.

I <33333333 Harry. Lollipops and bowties!! His talk with Don in the season finale about the carousel, and the artsy photos he took, and the cave paintings... was awesome.

Don getting high with the hippies = GOLD. I loved Midge. She was the coolest mistress there ever was. I am far more exasperated with Don/Rachel and i'm not sure why. They're pretty and Rachel is neat, but i am inexplicably bored by them together. :| Too much high drama.

PETE CAMPBELL WTF. Like, i knew he was the crazy one going into this, but. God damn. What a creepy fucking douchey motherfucker. The episode when he had the gun at the office was HILARIOUSLY TERRIFYING. Why did Peggy have to fall for the creepiest creep of all. :( It is also unfortunate because VK is so pretty (oh, Connor!), but... Pete. I am basically too horrified by him to find him pretty. THAT'S HOW BAD IT IS.

BETTY SHOOTING AT THE PIGEONS WAS THE BEST ENDING OF ANYTHING.

I seriously did not even have an inkling that Peggy might be pregnant until, WABAM, here's a baby! (I'M SLOW.) I... i was sort of hoping it would actually be a miscarriage. D: PETE CAMPBELL DEMON SPAWN, NOOOOOOOooooooooo. Oh, gross.

Peggy's steady transformation into the office pariah made me sad. But Peggy Olson: Junior Copywriter made me happpppyyyy. And Pete storming off like a five-year-old who hasn't gotten his way (as he is wont to do!) = comedy gold.

Hey remember that one time Harry said that Don "could be Batman for all we know"?! :D

JOAN, WHY SO PRETTY. Seriously, like every color she wears looks amazing on her. SHE'S LIKE A PAINTING OR A FLOWER. Also, secret lesbians. ;_;

Don's war flashbacks were saaaaaad. And his brother killing himself... ugh. Depressing. And damn, the carousel presentation. I basically reacted to that the same way as Harry: running away stifling tears. :****( SEASON FINALE ENDING: DEPRESSSSSSSSSING. I AM GLAD YOU ALL LEAD SUCH WONDERFUL LIVES.

I saw Sweeney Todd finally the other day, which i greatly enjoyed. I was completely unfamiliar with the source material so all the music was new and awesome to me! I ADORE MRS. LOVETT. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton, why so awesome! I am always uncontrollably saddened when protagonists die even when it is obvious it will happen and is also the only logical and acceptable resolution. Basically i have a very love/hate relationship with tragic endings, because on the one hand they often make a greater impact, but on the other hand they are depressing and i don't like being depressed. :( (and i didn't guess that Lucy was the beggar woman. i am extremely dense.) The "By The Sea" sequence was the best ever. Sweeney's dour face the entire time! HILARIOUS. How does Johnny Depp always look so awesome all the time, dang. I was reading wikipedia about the stage show and i love the original story's subtitle "The Barber of Fleet Street. A Domestic Romance." because Mrs. Lovett slaves in a kitchen all day and Sweeney brings home the bacon (...so to speak.) but they are both successful business partners you see! And he only pays attention to her because it furthers his own agenda! And they murder people and bake them into pies. A DOMESTIC ROMANCE. (i like it better in terms of irony than as a literal reference to the romance of the original Johanna character and her lover as it is meant to be. Misinterpretation = FUNNIER!) I find it interesting that it's pretty explicit that Sweeney was only ever in love with the idea of Lucy just as he was with the idea of revenge, and he was so obsessed with how beeeeeeeaaaauuuuuutiful Lucy was he failed to notice she was still alive in a derelict state. (i hate when beauty is the main reason given for loving a woman so i choose to read it partially as a condemnation of that, e.g. "Pretty Women" actually showing the similarity of Sweeney and the Judge.) In conclusion, HORROR MUSICAL. :D I wish Mrs. Lovett could have lived by the sea with her angry husband and adopted son instead of dying in an oven. :( Sigh. That is what happens when you are in love with a vengeful misanthropic murderer and have no qualms about baking cannibal pies i guess. MEAT PIES IS PEEEEEEEEOPLLLLLLLLLLLE

I REALLY LOVE MUSICALS AND TIM BURTON MOVIES! ONE PLUS ONE = HAPPINESS.

Oh also, my mom said it was like an opposite version of Pushing Daisies and i was like "lady, you crazy." but that is actually a really funny interpretation. Ned brings people back to life instead of killing them! Resurrected fruit is used in pies rather than murdered humans! Olive = Mrs. Lovett (unreciprocated adoration!), Chuck = Lucy (dead but not dead!) LOLZ

Speaking of horror musicals! I also just saw Dancer In The Dark after a million years. Hahaha that was the most aggressively depressing and emotionally manipulative thing i've probably ever seen! AWFUL. I tried to be numb to it because i knew it was never going to get any better, but i still cried like a little bitch. Ugh. I did think, though, that viewing it as such an obvious manipulation of the viewer's feelings was pretty interesting, because it was all about the juxtaposition between the musical fantasy and the ridiculously exaggerated awfulness of "reality" with about as much subtlety as frolicking with puppies and then sticking your head in an oven. But anyway the musical sequences were goooooooorgeous (particularly "I've Seen It All" and "Smith & Wesson") and Bjork's voice is so wonderful it fills me with glee. Holy crap, Peter Stormare always plays such friggin weird characters i have never noticed that he can be quite handsome. He was so sweet and normal and lovely in this, Jeff probably made me the saddest. :( And holy shit Siobhan Fallon. She was amazing. I find execution scenes terrifying. Always. UGH, BUMMER BUMMER BUMMER.

SCC 2x01 addendum

So man going back and reading all the SCC posts on my friends list made me far more enthusiastic about the premiere. (sainfoin_fields and rawles, i am looking at you! in addition to the surprisingly large number of SCC fans there are on my friends list!) The LJ enthusiasm for ROBOTS is apparently highly infectious, as it is what got me started watching the show in the first place and now 100% increases my excitement for it as well! It's weird, i do enjoy watching it but tend to gloss over the hugely awesome thematic issues because the show... doesn't seem that great on the surface. But then you go back and explore things further, like how oh holy shit the title "Samson and Delilah" relates to EVERYTHING REGARDING JOHN AND CAMERON SO AWESOMELY, and John refused to destroy Cameron even though it is his DESTINY to fight the robot apocalypse, and it was never explicitly stated that John killed Sarkissian but all signs point to John's birthday is the day he first killed a man, and then considering those things it's like, oh shit. This show is great. IT'S ALL THERE, it just requires some extra viewing skills. Or something. I need to watch it with 3D glasses i guess. 3D glasses that specially enhance TEXTUAL AWESOMENESS. (p.s. oh shit i'm going to Universal Studios next week and now i am excited to maybe see Terminator 2: 3D again! LOL CYBERDYNE HILARITY)

I will possibly never get over "I love you John and you love me."

Following my last post i made these for daygloparker's imaginings of David Tennant in a glittery Riddler bodysuit. I felt that i should share them with the rest of you, too!

I am going to talk for a minute about Roseanne! The sitcom! From a long time ago! THAT IS PRETTY RANDOM EVEN FOR ME, I KNOW. I remember always watching it when it was originally on the air, but it's a show i hadn't thought about in a long time or really considered as one of my favorite childhood sitcoms or anything. Then i started watching it on Nick at Nite a little while back, and it is actually really funny and subversive and i like it and we can just ignore whatever bullshit happened in the last season. The first episode i watched was the one where Darlene and David first get together (!!), and since then a large portion of the episodes i've caught have centered on Darlene and David, and it turns out i kind of ship them a whole lot. DARLENE IS A BADASS. I love her so much, oh man.

So anyway, then like a week or two ago, i saw that Sara Gilbert is guest-starring on The Big Bang Theory, a show that i actually pretty much hate and refuse to watch, but it stars Johnny Galecki and THUS:

DAVID AND DARLEEEEEEENE. WTF ACTOR REUNIONS WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO AWESOME SOMETIMES. Like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet being a screen couple again in Revolutionary Road! That makes me inexplicably happy toooooooo! I don't even love Titanic anymore but boy did i in middle school, yikes. Now we just need Sarah Michelle Gellar to guest star on Bones and i will have fully transformed back into a teenager.

...Don't look at me like that.

movies, mad men, batman, the big bang theory, scc (yeah you know me)
