Mustard-tasting in Dijon, wine-tasting in Beaune..it was a fun 2 days! I bought some cassis to bring back to the fam. That way, even if they buy semi-cheap white wine, you can make it so much better! Of course theres going to be a strong American accent because im not there to actually tell you how to roll your 'r's and all that good stuff but it should be fine
Important tip!!!!!:
if a german makes eye contact with you while you are walking down a street make sure that you say hello there are three ways to do this depending on what time it is at night.
1.) Tag= afternoon (tah-g)
2.) Abend= evening (ahh-bend)
3.) Morgen= morning (morgan...like the name morgan)
4.) not really one, but nacht = means night and is actually a way to say good-bye or goodnight
if you say this to an older person always add 'guten' in front of that, otherwise your being informal, it's not too big of a deal if your just passing someone on the street and don't add the formality to it but if you are being introduced, add the formality. trust me. old Germans are strong about tradition. Don't worry about some of the Germans if it seems like they look down at you, they can be a proud people and a lot of people confuse that for snobbery but in fact they will love you for trying to speak their language and most Germans know a broken English at least so you'll be fine. just remember, good steady eye contact, a broad honest smile, and a firm handshake you'll be good as gold! and of course a thirst to learn more about the country while your there. We Germans like to brag about what we have (at least people in small towns do, especially the old folks..Can't hush them up!!! ;) )
